Softball team gets props

The Huntington Beach Girls’ Softball 14-and-Under All-Star Team received individual commendations Monday in recognition of its outstanding performance this summer.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Dave Sullivan recognized the team, which was the first 14-and-Under team from Huntington Beach Girls’ Softball to win the Southern California District Championship, both the West Garden Grove and Brea All-Star Tournaments, finish in fifth place at the Amateur Softball Assn. State tournament and place 17th out of 57 teams at the ASA National Tournament held earlier this month in Aurora, Colo.

The team’s final record was 26-5, with the five losses coming against teams that finished first, second, third, seventh and 10th at the national tournament.

During the tournament, Huntington pitchers recorded five no-hitters and held the opposition to a combined batting average of .223. Offensively, Huntington batted .397 as a team. They defeated a state championship team from Texas en route to a national tournament record of 5-2.

The 14-and-Under All-Star team is: Jacqueline Kent, Lana Rutkin, Charlene Courtney, Jessica Garcia, Chelsea Breitwieser, Amanda Nicholaou, Kylee Lappin, Randi Heidenreich, Taylor Gould, Meghan White, Allison Dufault, Amanda Horowitz, Manager Brian White and coaches Steve Gould and Ron Kent.
