COLLEGE ROUNDUP:Vanguard blanks Carroll

HELENA, Mont. — Marissa Swift tallied seven saves as the Vanguard women’s soccer team notched its second shutout in two days with a 1-0 win over Carroll College in the Carroll Classic on Saturday.

Junior Rachel Housepian scored the winning goal off an assist from Heather Hutton in overtime.

With 10 seconds left in overtime, Hutton won a loose ball at midfield and slipped it to Housepian, who blasted an 18-yard shot inside the far post for the game-winning goal.

In a defensive battle, the Lions were held to three shots.

Vanguard’s Kelsey Bowman played in goal in the first half before giving way to Marissa Swift, who registered four second-half saves.

The Lions (2-0) won despite being outshot, 15-3.

Carroll College had 12 corner kicks to Vanguard’s two, but only the Lions were able to find the back of the net.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Portland State def. UC IrvineEUGENE, Ore. — The Anteaters dropped their second straight match on Saturday, falling to Portland State, 30-25, 30-26, 30-24, in the Oregon Kickoff Classic.

McCall Miller led UCI with 11 kills. Kristin Kelley and Lauren Kellerman added 10 kills each.

On Friday, UCI lost its season opener, 30-20, 30-16, 30-16, to host Oregon.
