CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

Newport Beach’s centennial celebration began in October 2005. Here are the remaining events that commemorate the city’s birthday.

  • Friday: Birthday cake-cutting and ceremony honoring some of the city’s oldest people and places; 10 a.m.; City Hall, 3300 Newport Blvd.; free.
  • Monday: Centennial wine tasting; 4 to 8 p.m.; Great Legs Wine Boutique, 2901 W. Coast Highway, Suite 100, Newport Beach; and the Wine Gallery, 2411 E. Coast Highway, Corona del Mar; cost is $25, with some proceeds going to the city’s centennial fund. (Also to be held Oct. 4.)
  • Oct. 6: Dinner and dance with Les Brown and His Band of Renown; 7 p.m.; Balboa Pavilion, 400 Main St., Balboa; tickets are $50 for the dance, or $75 to include dinner.
  • Oct. 8: “100 Years Between the Piers” finale celebration with live music at both piers and 15th Street, games, an art show and more; 2 to 8:30 p.m.; Newport and Balboa piers on the peninsula; free.
