WET AND WILD WITH ROCKIN’ FIG:

This is it — one last blast to end summer as the three-day Labor Day weekend is coming up. The weather looks like it’s gonna be nice again, with sunny skies expected, a small combo swell forecasted and water temps still in the mid-60s.

The Huntington Pier will have the BoardFest going big, as top names like Palos Verdes’ Holly Beck have been seen practicing out in the lineup, just one of a bunch of pro women surfers.

Besides surfing, there will be some skating competitions, snowboarding exhibitions, Polynesian dancers, tons of booths, free giveaways and more.

Definitely worth a check.

Meanwhile, down in Brazil at the Billabong Girls Pro, former six-time world champ Australian Layne Beachley was in top form, posting an incredible and unsurmountable two-wave score of 9.95 and 8.50 out of a possible 20 total, to take the win and take over the No. 1 spot in the world standings.

Beachley defeated world-tour rookie, 19-year-old Aussie standout Jessie Miley Dyer, in the tough conditions. Equal thirds were last year’s world champ Australian Chelsea Georgeson and Brazil’s Silvana Lima.

Former No. 1 in the standings, Melanie Redman Carr, who’s won an incredible three events this year, was upset early and placed equal 17th.

Next up for the women is the “Rip Curl Pro” in Hossegor, France, today through Sept. 5. Could Beachley be on a run to tie Kelly Slater’s seven world titles?

Over on the East Coast, they just finished up the 44th East Coast Surfing Championships at Virginia Beach in some 1- to 3-foot surf.

In the pro division, “Gorkin” Aaron Cormican, from New Smyrna Beach, Fla., was ripping all throughout the event and scored the win and $5,000.

Floridians placed second and third as well, as Kyle Garson and Alex Parker surfed hot.

In the women’s, Santa Ana’s Courtney Conlogue continued on her winning ways, and she’ll be back for the Kitty Board Fest in Surf City this weekend. Second was Newport Beach’s Anastasia Ashley.

In juniors, Oxnard’s Nick Rozsa was bustin’ the moves for the victory over New Smyrna’s Nils Schweizer and the Assn. of Surfing Professional’s top ranked junior, Eric Geiselman.

In longboards, Florida’s Mikey De Temple was doing the fancy footwork for the win, and Newport Beach’s Alex Knost came in a close second.

More big events are slated on the West Coast: the Fosters world championship tour’s men’s $280,000 Boost Mobile Pro at Lowers in San Clemente and the two-star A.S.P.-rated Newport Pro at 56th Street from Sept. 20 to 24.

This weekend, grab a sess at the beach, then throw those shrimp on the barbie in the afternoon. I know that’s what I’m doing.

Have a good one. Fig, over and out.
