Twenty tons of fresh snow will fall on Huntington Beach’s city beaches as part of Boardfest ‘06, a surf, snow and skate competition.

All-girl teams will be snowboarding down a three-story platform at the Huntington Beach Pier Boardfest, starting Saturday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 4, during the Labor Day weekend. The event is known for its all-female snowboard rail jams, where world-class athletes will compete for a $1,000 “trick” prize.

Competition organizers plan to build a custom platform for the snowboarders. The fest also features live bands, yoga clinics and dance performances. Most of the event is free of charge. For more information, visit boardfest.com or call (714) 375-1132.

Amigos celebrate 30 years

Members of the Amigos de Bolsa Chica will celebrate 30 years of being in existence with a party Sept. 2 at the Bolsa Chica Conservancy Interpretive Center.

The Amigos was founded in 1976, and “their goal was to first save, then preserve for future generation, restore and now make sure that the wetlands are expertly managed by the Department of Fish and Game,” Shirley Dettloff, former Huntington Beach mayor and Coastal Commission member, said in a news release.

Tours of the Bolsa Chica will be conducted from 9 to 11 a.m. near the walk bridge on Pacific Coast Highway. At noon, the party will start at the Interpretive Center off Warner Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway.

Mayor Dave Sullivan, Councilman Gil Coerper and State Sen. Tom Harman will speak at 12.30 p.m., followed by introducing honorees and past Amigos presidents cutting the cake. The event is free for the public, including food and drinks.

Members needed for city board

The Citizens Participation Advisory Board is looking to fill positions for three new members starting in October. .

The board makes recommendations to the City Council on allocating funds from community development grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Board meetings are at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month at the Huntington Beach Civic Center.

Members work directly with residents and evaluate funding requests for low- and moderate-income families.

KOCE-TV’s ‘Real Orange’ turns 10

Huntington Beach-based PBS station KOCE-TV’s nightly news broadcast “Real Orange” will celebrate its 10th season on air Sept. 1.

The news program is anchored by veteran journalists Ed Arnold and Ann Pulice. The program was conceived as a forum for local newsmakers to discuss Orange County issues.

“Through their excellence and leadership, the ‘Real Orange’ team has produced extraordinary work over the years,” said KOCE-TV President and General Manager Mel Rogers.

In the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, “Real Orange” broadcast local news and information, including travel updates from John Wayne Airport, state and federal offices closures as well as interviewing Muslim-American community members who denounced terrorism.

American Cancer Society reopens center

The American Cancer Society reopened its regional center at the Fountain Valley Regional Hospital & Medical Center Aug. 25.

The regional cancer center, or InfoCenter, provides programs, services and assistance to cancer patients free of charge.

The center, at 11190 Warner Ave., will be a great resource for the community, said Dr. An D. Nguyen, oncologist and hematologist at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, in a news release. “The InfoCenter gives cancer patients a less threatening way to come and get the information they need in one location, from volunteers who understand what they are going through.”

The center will offer materials in Spanish and Vietnamese languages also.

Three volunteers will staff the center, including Huntington Beach resident Vel Straub.

“I have had several relatives and friends who have battled cancer and did not know where to go to get help,” Straub said in a news release.

“It feels good to be able to help these patients along their journey by providing them with answers to their questions and referring them to the resources the American Cancer Society has to offer,” she said.

Brewbakers’ foamy film tie-in

Brewbakers of Huntington Beach, dubbed the official brewery for Warner Bros.’ new comedy “Beerfest,” is offering a special deal with the release of the film, which opened in theaters Aug. 25.

Shop patrons spending $25 or more at the personal craft brewery and pretzel shop will receive two tickets to see the film, a movie poster and a coaster. All proceeds from the sales will go to charity. Tickets are limited.
