Having recently signed on as a full-time instructor at Golden West College, Martie Ramm is looking for a few other uncommon women.

Ramm will be directing “Uncommon Women and Others,” the first play by the recently deceased playwright Wendy Wasserstein, in its second production at Golden West. The show was offered some years back in the Actors Playbox on campus.

Auditions will be held Sept. 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. in Stage West on the Golden West campus. Rehearsals will begin Oct. 3.

“Rehearsals will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings but might change depending on availability of cast members,” Ramm noted. “If you are cast in the show, you will need to register for a one- to two-unit college course.”

At least nine women’s roles will be available, with five falling into the 20 to 27 age range, three more in the 18 to 20 group and one age 40 or older.

The play “is about women you really care about,” Ramm said. “This comedy/drama delves into the lives, loves and aspirations of a group of seniors at an Ivy League women’s college.”

Among the women in the 20 to 27 age range are Muffett, stylish and charming; Holly, a disheveled spectator; Kate, a composed, attractive lawyer; Samantha, quiet, tasteful and witty; and Rita, outrageous and imaginative.

Characters in the 18 to 20 grouping are Susie, a perky event coordinator; Carter, frail and catatonic; and Leilah, distant and intellectual. The older woman, Mrs. Plumm, is the school’s strict house mother.

Performances of “Uncommon Women and Others” will be presented Nov. 16 to 19 at the college’s Stage West theater. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Ramm at mrammengle@gwc.cccd.edu or (714) 895-8223.

Auditions begin for comedy ‘Red Noses’

Golden West College will be holding auditions next week for its opening production of the new season, “Red Noses,” a comedy by Peter Barnes, to be directed by Tom Amen.

The tryouts are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Mainstage Theater on campus. Perusal scripts are available at the college’s library reserve desk.

All roles — for about 12 men and 10 women — are open, and all types, shapes, sizes and levels of talent are needed. Dancers, singers, jugglers, acrobats, clowns and mimes are strongly encouraged to audition.

Many roles may be cast along gender lines, and actors of color are particularly needed.

The show will be staged from Nov. 3 to Nov. 19, and additional information may be obtained from Amen by calling (714) 892-7711, ext. 55237, or online at tamen@gwc.cccd.edu.
