Fundraiser will have rock ‘n’ roll feel

A Saturday benefit for a nonprofit group that helps inmates after their release will feature music by Eagles and Rolling Stones cover bands on the Balboa Peninsula.

The Road Home Foundation, which aids people after incarceration to reduce their chances of going back to jail, will hold a fundraiser at American Legion Post 291, 215 E. 15th St.

Starting at 7 p.m., the party will include a barbecue dinner, a silent auction and musical tributes to the Eagles by Desperado and to the Rolling Stones by Jumpin’ Jack Flash.

A chance to get in touch with old movies

Classic movies including “Annie Hall” and “Casablanca” will be featured in a Tuesday-night film series that kicks off this month at the Newport Beach Public Library.

Film producer Robert D. Kline will discuss how the films were developed and lead question-and-answer sessions after screenings.

The series begins Sept. 12 with “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” followed by “Annie Hall” on Oct. 10, “Casablanca” on Nov. 14, and “Pride and Prejudice” on Dec. 12.

The movies will be shown in the Friends Meeting Room at the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

Tickets are $12 for students and $15 for general admission, with a discount for Newport Beach Public Library Foundation members.

Library is scene for California novelist’s talk

California novelist Carolyn See will talk about her work, including her newest book, Wednesday at the Newport Beach Central Library.

See’s latest book, “There Will Never Be Another You,” is set in Southern California. She has written five books, reviewed books for the Washington Post and won several awards for her work.

See will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Friends Meeting Room at the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

Lifeguards want a little bit of blood

The Newport Beach Lifeguards are closing out the summer with a blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. today at lifeguard headquarters at the base of the Newport Pier.

The blood drive is held in union with the American Red Cross. Walk-ins are welcome. For information or to make an appointment, call (949) 644-3175.
