COLLEGE ROUNDUP:Vanguard off to 4-0 start

COSTA MESA — The Vanguard University women’s volleyball team improved to 4-0 with a pair of victories Saturday at the Crowne-Plaza Labor Day Volleyball Festival at the Lions’ gym.

Vanguard defeated Menlo College, 30-26, 30-24, 30-23, after outlasting Westminster of Utah, 26-30, 31-29, 28-30, 30-19, 15-12.

The Lions opened the tournament Friday with three-game wins over Vitebro and Holy Names.

Junior outside hitter Kelly Wynn amassed a team-high 58 kills in the four matches, followed by freshman outside hitter Kelsey Wirt (48) and sophomore middle blocker Kelly Shortridge (43).

Wirt collected 66 combined digs to lead the Lions, who received 55 digs from Wynn.

Setters Breanne Peterson, a sophomore, and freshman Meghan Walsh contributed 70 and 67 assists, respectively, in the four wins.

Vanguard begins Golden State Athletic Conference play Tuesday at The Master’s.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UCI 14, Pomona-Pitzer 1

UC Davis 9, UCI 8 (OT)

LA JOLLA -- The Anteaters opened their season with a split at the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego.

Colin Mello and Cole Bielskis scored four goals apiece in the opening rout, before No. 14-ranked UC Davis edged the No. 8-ranked Anteaters in the second game.

Mello and Andrew Dunn had three goals each against UC Davis, while UCI goalie Matt Garcia added 13 saves.

UCI meets UC Santa Barbara today at 8 a.m. in a consolation semifinal.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 2, Dominican 0

LA MIRADA — Junior Rachel Housepian scored twice and the Lions’ defense did not allow a shot on goal in a nonconference game Saturday at Biola.

Heather Hutton had an assist for Vanguard (3-0).

Dominican fell to 0-2.

UNLV 3, UC Irvine 0

LAS VEGAS — The Anteaters fell to 0-3 with a setback in their first game of the UNLV Adidas Classic on Saturday.

UCI had six shots and goalie Erin Henry made six saves for the Anteaters.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 3, Niagra 0

IRVINE — Sophomore Matt Murphy scored twice in the second half to help the host Anteaters roll in the UC Irvine College Classic.

UCI’s other score was an own goal and Kenny Schoeni was not required to make a save for the shutout.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Michigan def. UC Irvine

IRVINE — The Anteaters fell to 0-5 as the Wolverines prevailed, 30-22, 30-22, 20-27, in the Anteaters’ second and final match of the UCI Nike Invitational at Crawford Court.

Lauren Kellerman had 13 kills and McCall Miller added 10 for UCI.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cal State Fullerton Invitational

BREA — Vanguard University sophomore Grace Jepngetich finished fourth in the women’s 5K race Saturday to highlight runners representing area schools at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational at Carbon Canyon Park.

Jepngetich finished in 18 minutes, 27.60 seconds.

Elda Hernandez of Orange Coast College finished 13th in the women’s race (19:00.40), and OCC’s Erendira Uriostegui (19:09.50) finished 19th.

In the men’s 8K, Vanguard junior Travis Hartanov was the top finisher representing a local school. He finished 35th in 27:10.90.

Billy Smith (56th in 27:38.0) and Mike Haranov (65th in 27:48.50) also ran well for Vanguard.

Ernesto Castaneda was 69th in 27:52.60 to help the OCC men finish 13th as a team.

The OCC women finished ninth and the Vanguard women were 14th.
