Not a day to labor

The Labor Day holiday, traditionally the last day of summer, also tends to have this annoying habit of sneaking up on us. And the weather as forecast in Newport-Mesa for today won’t help: Skies should be mostly sunny, temperatures might approach 80 and the water at the beaches still should be unusually warm.

Summer’s over? You wouldn’t know it from today.

But there’s no denying the calendar, and Labor Day is definitely here.

Of course, government offices being closed isn’t the top thing on the minds of a whole swath of the Newport-Mesa population. After all, Tuesday is the first day of school in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

And that is the real signal that summer is over.
