Segerstrom donates $10 million

The Orange County Performing Arts Center’s Building on the Vision campaign has $50 million to go after a confirmed $10-million donation from Henry Segerstrom has been thrown in the pot.

The gift is the most recent from Segerstrom since his lead donation of $40 million in 2000 for the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, which opens this weekend. The Segerstrom family also donated the parcel of land and $6 million for the existing center and South Coast Repertory.

In 1998, Segerstrom donated the additional six acres for the new hall, which were valued at $13.2 million, said Tim Dunn, spokesman for the arts center.

The Segerstrom Foundation has also donated a substantial amount to the center, said Paul Freeman, a Segerstrom spokesman.

“This is just helping to provide further support,” Freeman said.

Segerstrom and his wife of six years, Elizabeth Segerstrom, also commissioned “The Connector,” a sculpture by Richard Serra in the pedestrian arts plaza.

The $10 million brings the campaign to $151 million, with more donations on the way, said Jennifer Mahal, a center spokeswoman. The campaign’s goal remains at $200 million.

The Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall was named for Segerstrom and his late wife, who died in 2000.

A gala opening is planned for this weekend. It will include a performance by famed tenor Placido Domingo.

Attempts to reach Segerstrom and Terry Dwyer, the arts center president, were unsuccessful Tuesday.
