HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:CdM, Sailors win a pair

The Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high school girls’ volleyball teams each won their first two pool-play matches Friday at the Dave Mohs Tournament, being held at various sites.

CdM rallied to top Upland, 23-25, 25-18, 15-8, then Carlsbad, 19-25, 25-11, 15-7, at Marina High.

The Sea Kings will try to sweep their pool when they meet Bishop Montgomery today at 9 a.m., also at Marina.

Senior Juliane Piggott had 15 kills and nine digs against Carlsbad and had 14 kills and six digs against Upland.

Kelly Christian had 19 assists and five aces against Carlsbad and 11 assists against Upland.

If victorious today, CdM would advance to the playoffs at Edison High.

Newport Harbor defeated Woodbridge, 20-25, 25-19, 15-2, then handled Hemet, 26-24, 25-13, in its pool at Newport Harbor.

The Sailors face Dos Pueblos today at 9:15, hoping to advance to the championship playoffs at Marina.

Senior Katie Wells had eight kills, Megan Munce six, Alex Pennewell five and Jamie Heenan four against Woodbridge.

Against Hemet, Munce had 10 kills, followed by Heenan’s six.

Junior setter Alesha Young had 25 assists in each match. She added seven digs against Woodbridge and collected six digs and two aces against Hemet.

Newport Harbor is now 2-0.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Pomona Tournament

POMONA — Estancia High used 15 ace serves to defeat Workman, 25-7, 25-8, 25-11, Friday to improve to 3-0 in pool play.

Jaye Hellmich had eight kills, while Annie Tomasek added seven for the Eagles, who face Wilson of Hacienda Heights in today’s 11 a.m. quarterfinal.

Olivia Schow and Sarah Braunsdorf each had five aces Friday.

FIELD HOCKEY

Newport Harbor 1, Harvard-Westlake 1

NORTH HOLLYWOOD — Senior midfielder Rachel Foster scored on an assist from senior Jackie Sanchez with 5:53 left in the game to help the Sailor salvage a nonleague tie Friday.

The Sailors’ late goal answered a first-half tally by the Wolverines, by virtue of a penalty stroke.

Newport Harbor Coach Devon Kelly credited Foster, sophomore forward Shannon Rohan and senior forward Robin Ibetson for strong play.

Senior goalie Jessica Pizarek made four saves for the Sailors (5-1-2).

GIRLS’ GOLF

San Clemente Tournament

SAN CLEMENTE — Estancia High finished ninth in the 25-team field Friday at the 18-hole event at San Clemente Municipal Golf Course.

Senior Bridget Gleason shot 11-over-par 84 to pace the Eagles, who also received scoring efforts from Lina You (87) and Caroline Clements (93).

The Eagles play Monday at the Palm Desert Tournament at The Lakes Country Club.
