COLLEGE ROUNDUP:UCI women pull off upset

SAN DIEGO — One week after earning her first victory, first-year UC Irvine women’s soccer coach April Heinrichs posted her first significant win as the Anteaters upset No. 22-ranked San Diego, 2-1, Sunday on the Toreros field.

Sophomore Christina Gorospe scored her first career goal in the 45th minute to give UCI a 1-0 lead and junior Frankee Kelly scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the 56th minute.

Kelly’s goal was a header off a cross from senior Brittany Coffin.

Gorospe chipped the ball over the keeper from 18 yards out.

The Toreros cut the lead in half in the 61st minute, but the Anteaters’ defense held up, behind seven saves from sophomore Erin Henry.

San Diego (6-2) outshot the visitors, 14-6.

The Anteaters (2-5), return to action Friday at Stanford.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 2, St. Mary’s 1

LAS VEGAS — Sophomore Rafael Macedo knocked in a deflection from Matt Murphy to break a 1-1 tie in the 49th minute Sunday in the UNLV Rebel Classic.

Murphy tallied his sixth goal of the season to open the scoring in the 19th minute, converting a free kick from 25 yards out.

The Gaels (2-3-3) answered in the 38th minute.

UCI senior Kenny Schoeni had eight saves to help the Anteaters improve to 5-1-1.

UCI opens Big West Conference play Saturday at UC Riverside.

MEN’S WATER POLO

NorCal Tournament

STANFORD, Calif. — UC Irvine junior Colin Mello scored three goals to lead the No. 12-ranked Anteaters to a 10-8 win over No. 8-ranked Pepperdine in the 11th-place game of the Northern California Tournament at Stanford on Sunday.

Andrew Dunn and Kyle Baxter added two goals each for UCI (4-5).

UCI fell, 14-9, to No. 11-ranked Navy in its first game Sunday.
