Everyone should plan to attend the Spice of Life Salsa Ball Dinner and Dance on Friday, Oct. 6, from 5:30 to 11 p.m., at the Irvine Marriott Hotel, 18000 Von Karman Ave.

Hosted by Julia Argyros, the Salsa Ball will feature live salsa music, free salsa lessons, dinner and dancing, and a silent auction.

The event will benefit Orange County’s Learning for Life and Scoutreach programs sponsored by the Orange County Council of Boy Scouts of America. The night’s speaker is Jamie Escalante, considered one of the most renowned educators in the United States.

  • The 1988 film “Stand and Deliver” is a semi-documentary on the life of Escalante, an inner-city schoolteacher, played by Edward James Olmos, who was nominated for an Academy Award in the role. The film dramatizes Escalante’s efforts to help underachieving Latino students beat the odds and pass an advanced placement calculus test.

Learning for Life programs help youth develop social and life skills, assist in character and career development, and help youth formulate positive personal values. It prepares them to make ethical decisions that will help them achieve their full potential. Scoutreach programs work with economically underprivileged and at-risk communities through youth development programs, classroom lessons and parent training. Scoutreach is the Boy Scouts of America’s commitment to making sure that all young people have an opportunity to join scouting, regardless of their circumstances, neighborhood or ethnic background.

This year’s co-chairs are Victoria Gray of Northern Trust Bank of California and David Elliott of Vanguard University. Event sponsors include: AT&T;, First American Corp., Northgate Markets, Northern Trust Bank of California, Santa Ana Unified School District, Trico Realty, Vanguard University and Westcom Credit Union.

Tickets are $150 for an individual; $250 for a twosome. Table and corporate sponsorships begin at $2,500. Nationally recognized salsa dancer Liz Lira & the Salsa Soleil Dance Company will be on hand to provide free salsa lessons during the event.
