Costa Mesa Police have arrested a 61-year-old Stanton man on a charge of attempted homicide in the Saturday freeway shooting of a Costa Mesa man.

Duane Kressin, 28, of Costa Mesa, was hospitalized at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana after Robert Charles Berg allegedly shot him in the chest during what police believe was a road rage incident on the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway. Kressin was still in intensive care Monday, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Don Holford said.

Police said Kressin was riding in his car, which a friend was driving, around 5:45 p.m. Saturday when a man in a pick-up truck cut them off on the northbound 55 Freeway.

The truck, a maroon 1999 Ford F-150, had a cab cover and an Oregon license plate with the letters A, M, G and E on it.

The truck’s driver stopped in front of Kressin’s vehicle on the off-ramp near Del Mar. Kressin got out of his vehicle to confront the other driver, who shot him in the chest, police said.

“Nothing happened other than there was just some posturing back and forth, gestures and all of a sudden he [Berg] pulled over, stopped in front of the victim, the victim went over to find out what was the problem and he was shot,” Holford said.

Berg was being held in the Orange County Jail on $1-million bail. His arraignment was scheduled for today in Newport Beach.
