BRIEFS:Back Bay products honored

Orange Coast College freshman linebacker Shaun Mohler, a Corona del Mar High product, and former Newport Harbor High quarterback Kasey Peters, now a sophomore at Santa Ana College, have been lauded by the Mission Conference.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Mohler, the conference Defensive Player of the Week, was in on 18 tackles, including 14 solo stops, to help the Pirates post a 28-21 upset of visiting Palomar on Saturday.

Peters (6-3, 220 pounds) threw five touchdown passes to lead the Dons to a 45-35 win over Fullerton to earn Offensive Player of the Week laurels.

Peters completed 14 of 32 pass attempts for 280 yards with no interceptions.

ORNGUZE RECOGNIZED

Mordy Ornguze, a former standout defensive back at Corona del Mar High and Orange Coast College, has been named National Special Teams Player of the Week by The Sports Network.

Ornguze, a junior at Western Carolina, blocked a punt and returned it 22 yards for a TD, and was in on two tackles to help key a 20-17 win over Eastern Kentucky Saturday.

UCI’s MURPHY LAUDED

UC Irvine sophomore Matt Murphy was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and was named Big West Conference Player of the Week after helping UCI go 2-0 at the UNLV Rebel Classic, completed Sunday.

The Anteaters won the tournament following a 1-0 win over Maryland-Baltimore County and a 2-1 win over Saint Mary’s.

Murphy recorded two goals and an assist in the tournament. He his 14th in the country in goals per game (0.86) and 16th in the country with 2.0 points per game.
