TWO-MINUTE DRILL

To say that senior Mater Dei High transfer Taylor Hughes has energized the Corona del Mar football team’s passing game would be a serious understatement.

Through three games, Hughes has thrown for 712 yards, an average of more than 237 per game, and seven touchdowns.

Last season, when the Sea Kings alternated quarterbacks, they threw for 888 yards in 12 games (74 per contest) and had just eight touchdown passes all season.

  • Dating back to last year, Newport Harbor High has won eight straight games.
  • The Sailors have also shut out three of the past four opponents.

  • Costa Mesa High was encouraged by its showing against Huntington Beach, after being down, 14-0, at halftime and 21-7 late in the third quarter.
  • “I think we’re getting better, and it should prepare us for league,” said receiver/cornerback Kirkland Huynh. “We didn’t want to schedule the easy teams, because what’s that going to do when we get to league? Nothing.”

  • The Mustangs’ defensive line did a decent job of keeping Huntington Beach running back Stephen Gabbard in check in the first half, but had trouble doing the same in the second half.
  • Gabbard’s longest first-half run was 19 yards, but he had three runs of 25 yard or more in the second half — all touchdowns.

  • Costa Mesa kept the score close for much of the game, given that Huntington Beach consistently had good field position.
  • The Oilers had first-half possessions that started at the Costa Mesa eight-yard line, the Costa Mesa 25, midfield, and the Huntington Beach 47.

  • Huntington Beach, which runs the smashmouth double wing under Coach Mike Groscost, a former Costa Mesa assistant, had attempted just three passes in its first two games. The Oilers tried just two more during its game against Costa Mesa, completing one for 29 yards.
  • After Newport Harbor’s 27-0 victory over Irvine, Sailors Coach Jeff Brinkley made sure to hug former players Robert Chai and Dave Marshall.
  • Chai is the senior starting center for the UCLA Bruins and was there to watch his alma mater play. The Bruins were on their bye week.

Marshall recently graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
