Huntington Beach resident David James Richardson was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on seven counts of tax fraud, federal officials said today.

Richardson, 48, allegedly filed false claims to the Internal Revenue Service totaling more than $850,000 in tax refunds that were not his to receive, Assistant U.S. Atty. Robert Gannon said.

Between 2000 and 2003, Richardson applied for returns through two businesses — CCK Sports Foundation Inc. and Everyone Can Play Inc. — organizations he claimed were set up to promote youth sports.

Charged with five counts of filing false claims, one count of passing fake checks and one count of obstructing the IRS, Richardson faces 53 years in federal prison if convicted.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 2 in Santa Ana.

The indictment states that Richardson went as far as to call the IRS demanding checks he knew were not his to claim, Gannon said.
