Costa Mesa police have arrested a second suspect in connection with the Aug. 2 drive-by shooting that killed a Costa Mesa man and hurt four others.

Rachel Lauren Salorio, 22, of Irvine was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of accessory to murder.

Hawthorne Police on Tuesday assisted Costa Mesa officers in arresting Joshua Anthony Blount, 22, of Compton on suspicion of murder with a special circumstance allegation that he used a gun. Blount is accused of killing Israel Maciel, 23, in an alley in the 1300 block of West Baker Street, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Marty Carver said. Four others were hurt in the shooting.

Salorio was arrested after coming to the police station to visit her boyfriend Blount. Investigators interviewed Salorio at the station and decided to arrest her in connection with the shooting, Carver said. Salorio’s bail was set at $1 million. She is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.

Carver declined to offer details on what role Salorio allegedly had in the shooting.

Carver said Blount is on probation in Los Angeles County for a weapons violation. Police identified Blount as a gang member, but have no information yet to determine if the shooting of Maciel and the others was gang-related.

Blount was scheduled to be arraigned today at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach.

A $10,000 reward offered by the Costa Mesa City Council on Sept. 5 did not lead to Blount’s arrest, Carver said. He also declined to say what the motive was in the shooting or why police thought the suspect was in Hawthorne.

Maciel’s stepfather, Martin Rodriguez, said he and his family are grateful for the hard work police have done on his son’s case.

“But the arrest is not going to bring back my son,” Rodriguez said Wednesday. “The only thing I want is for them to lock him up so he won’t hurt anyone else.”

Since his son died, he and his wife Agustina have visited their son’s grave every Saturday. His grave is unmarked now, but in a few weeks it will have a marble headstone bearing Maciel’s image.

Anyone with information about the slaying is asked to call Costa Mesa Police Det. Dana Potts at (714) 754-5363 or Det. Patrick Wesel at (714) 754-5178.
