Chargers win first -- just

A defensive stand in the final moments of Saturday’s Pop Warner football game allowed the Huntington Beach Junior Midget 2 Gold Chargers to pick up their first win of the season, 26-24 against the Norwalk Titans.

Running back Sean Whiteman rushed for more than 100 yards and scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Tight end Jacob Belkin caught a touchdown pass from Randal Mycorn and fullback Robert Young rushed for 80 yards.

Defensively, cornerback Erick Zumwalt had a pair of sacks, Whiteman — an outside linebacker — had a sack and caused a fumble, lineman Jack Dennis blocked two point-after touchdown attempts and cornerback Cameron Bustos made a last-second tackle to preserve the win.

Lineman Robert Young, defensive end David Luther and inside linebacker Aaron Rakhshani also made key plays for Huntington.

Junior Midget Division

Huntington 32, Yorba Linda 0

Tanner Greeley’s 24-yard run on a sweep capped a seven-play opening drive and sent the Green Chargers (4-0) on their way to an easy victory over the visiting Chargers.

Three plays following Greeley’s TD run, Isaah Lumbruno intercepted a pass and returned it 83 yards for another touchdown. Adam Spies later scored on a 24-yard run.

A hit by Eric Vogelsang and Steven Springer on a Yorba Linda rusher allowed Montana Merhoff to recover a fumble at the four-yard line to set up another TD run by Greeley and then Spies and quarterback Chris Dubois connected on a 41-yard scoring pass, which gave Huntington a commanding 32-0 lead at the half.

Huntington’s defense — with all 26 players recording a tackle in the game — held Yorba Linda to just one first down and was led in the second half by lineman Josh Schlichter and middle linebacker Mitch Clark.

Pee Wee Division

Huntington 31, La Mirada 0

Brett Adams rushed for four touchdowns and Dylan Luther had a scoring run as the Green Chargers (3-1) routed the Gold Matadors at La Mirada High.

Linemen Michael Kelly, William Sprowls, Thomas Firmin, Jake Thiessen, Max Redfield, Frank Gonsalves, Marcus Stepancich, Brody Kyler, Steven Green, Jake Fuga, Blake LaBounty, Tala Atofa, Ohana Mataia and Brendan Wangberg opened up big holes for the rushing attack.

Junior Pee Wee Division

Huntington 8, Santa Margarita 0

Treavon Coley scored on the game’s only touchdown on a fourth-down run with 1:40 remaining, as Huntington (4-0) won this battle between undefeated teams at Trabuco Hills High.

The late drive was set up by a one-handed catch by Coley on a pass from Steele Escobedo that put the Green Chargers at the Gold Eagles’ 23-yard line. Trevor Borowski provided the two-point conversion.

Stone Escobedo intercepted a pass in the third quarter to end a Santa Margarita drive.

Huntington 33, Tustin 6

Noah Nabors rushed for his first touchdown of the season and the White Chargers moved their record to 3-0 by defeating the White Cobras in Tustin.

Running back Dylan Sneed also rushed for a score in the first quarter and Eric Muller ran for two scores in the second quarter, as Huntington opened up a 26-0 lead.

Daylan Harmeyer, Julian Arteaga and Matt Fileta led a strong defensive effort by the White Chargers, who limited Tustin to just 60 total yards.

Jr. Mighty Mite Division

Huntington 21, Pasadena 0

Led by the defensive play of Nicholas Warren, Johnny Siebel, Hunter Martinez and quarterback/safety Danny Casaro, Huntington remained undefeated with the win at Pasadena.
