Oilers drop a pair in girls’ volleyball

Huntington Beach and Newport Harbor played a tight nonleague girls’ volleyball match Tuesday, and it was the host Sailors who came away with a 22-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-22 victory.

Chrissy VanDoornum, Lindsey Benac, Kellie Turner, Brooke Mullins and Stephanie Tran led the way for the Oilers offensively, with VanDoornum and Kalyn Klaess finishing with 12 and 11 assists, respectively. Tori Thompson had 25 assists and Turner added four blocks and a pair of aces to her performance.

In a match where Coach Kim Clarke said her squad was “a half-second off” in all facets of its game, Huntington was swept by visiting Corona del Mar, 25-17, 25-17, 25-22, Thursday.

“We did not challenge them. We [had] a poor showing,” Clarke said.

VanDoornum had six kills, Klaess finished with six digs and Thompson added 14 assists for the Oilers.

In field hockey:

Edison bounced back from a tough road loss to Chaminade to shut out visiting Westminster, 2-0.

The Chargers got the shutout because of the defensive efforts of Megan Duehring and goalie Danielle Herrington and leadership of senior Elena Hill.

Edison’s two goals came courtesy of junior Harmony Chartier and senior Lauren Ardis, with Kelsey Hwang getting an assist.

In girls’ tennis:

Huntington Beach picked up a pair of nonleague victories in recent action. The Oilers rolled past La Quinta and Gahr by 17-1 scores.

In the La Quinta match, singles players Jennifer Heumann, Monica Stupaczuk and Kala Johnson swept their Aztec opponents and in doubles action, the team of Christina Le and Diana Le and team of Ann Quan and Stephanie La also earned sweeps.

Against Gahr, the Oilers swept the Gladiators in singles action.
