BRIEFS:UCI’s Mickelson earns honor

UC Irvine junior Sara Mickelson was named Big West Conference athlete of the week for women’s cross country.

Mickelson was fifth out 124 athletes at the Stanford Invitational Saturday. Mickelson finished in a time of 20 minutes, 34 seconds on the 6,000 meter course.

Mickelson’s finish helped the Anteaters to second place at the 17-team event.

Her time was the fastest in the Big West Conference this season.

Vanguard to host clinic

The Vanguard University basketball program will host an instructional clinic on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Vanguard gym.

Instructors will include Vanguard men’s basketball coach Fred Litzenberger, who has over 40 years teaching the game of basketball at Oregon, Colorado State, the University of Miami and Fresno State.

The Lions men’s basketball associate head coach Walt Simon and assistant coach Mike Kelly will also provide instruction.

Attendees will get to watch the Lions practice and learn the match-up zone defense and motion offense.

There will also be a question and answer time, with player demonstration.

The cost is $20 for coaches and $10 for players, which includes lunch and a notebook.
