Forty Majority in playoffs
Forty Majority is playoff-bound after a 1-0 win over FD Mavericks in Monday League action in the city of Laguna Beach Community Services Department’s summer 16-inch, slow-pitch softball league.
Mark Lewis threw a four-hit shutout that included a first-inning double by Adam Schulenburg and three other singles.
Forty Majority lead-off batter Santi Pierini singled and scored the game’s lone run in the first inning. Mark Linton also singled twice for the winners.
Forty Majority joins top-seed Bamboo Bar and Grill, No. 2-seed Rotary and fourth-seeded DUI Fighters in Monday League postseason play.
In other Monday League action:
C-Dawgs 15, DUI Fighters 3
Dan Jones and Frank Fanieri each hit a home run, double and single to spearhead a 21-hit attack, as the C-Dawgs sprinted past the DUI Fighters.
Ted Boyko also singled three times for the C-Dawgs.
Mike Jewell had two homers to account for all three runs for the DUI Fighters.
Rotary 14, Hosers 0
Don Amor produced a three-run home run and three singles and Steve Swett and Mark Maurer each had three singles, as Rotary pounded out 17 hits in blanking the Hosers.
Tuesday League
Used Cars 4, Sandpiper 3
Top-seed Used Cars advanced to the league final by slipping past second-seeded Sandpiper.
The two teams will meet again in the championship final.
Mike McKenzie hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Used Cars an early lead. In the second inning, Ed Mari doubled and scored on an RBI single by Greg Kain. McKenzie collected his third RBI when his single scored Kain. Pat Toohey also singled twice for Used Cars.
Key Sandpiper hits were a solo homer and two singles by Jeff Heminghaus and a double and single by Russ Stover.
Sandpiper 16,
Ganahl Lumber 8
After losing by a run to Used Cars, Sandpiper was dropped into losers’ bracket play and stayed alive for the league title by eliminating Ganahl Lumber.
Jeff Heminghaus and Sean Bill each recorded five RBI. Bill homered twice and doubled and Heminghaus also hit a pair of homers. Mica Brown added to Sandpiper’s offensive output with a three-run home run and single. Bob Bonn hammered three home runs and drove in four runs and Steve Dixon and Jeff Stevens each singled twice to lead the offense for Ganahl Lumber.
Wednesday League
Hennessey’s 10, Puswatrkylegs 3
Hennessey’s used a six-run first-inning to propel past Puswatrkylegs and into the league’s championship final.
During the decisive first inning, Nate Pivaroff, Ryan Neptune, Keith Mulvaney, Scott Martin and Pat Toohey hit home runs. Michael McKenzie also singled in the frame and later added a solo home runs in the second an fifth innings.
Ryan Schissler hit a two-run homer, Jesse Westgaard had a solo homer and Matt Shuster singled twice for Puswatrkylegs.
Mesa Verde Partners 21, Puswatrkylegs 8
Mesa Verde Partners reserved a spot in the league final after eliminating Puswatrkylegs.
Jeff Pich homered and singled three times and Jeff Greenough and Matt Kucero both homered twice for the defending league champions.
For Puswatrkylegs, Trevor Lyle hit a pair of home runs and Vincent Marconi and Jesse Westgaard each singled twice.
Thursday League
Arbitech 8, Red Runs 7
Defending league champion Arbitech ascended to first-place in its regular season finale by winning for the fifth time in six games.
Six weeks ago, Arbitech wallowed in sixth-place and didn’t appear headed for postseason play.
Art McGrath hit two home runs, the second of which lifted Arbitech to victory in the eighth inning. McGrath finished with five RBI.
Ryan Divel homered and singled twice for the Red Runs and Josh Hutley and Dale Rehberg hit back-to-back doubles during a four-run second-inning.
Compound Fractures 9,
Team Hobie 0
Steve Hurst drove in five runs behind two home runs and a single and also tossed a five-hitter, all singles, as Compound Fractures eliminated Team Hobie from the postseason.
Fractures lead-off hitter David Strong had a two-run homer in addition to three singles.
