COMMUNITY & CLUBS:Tuskegee Airmen at Costa Mesa Kiwanis

The Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa will present a special program featuring two members of the Tuskegee Airmen at its regular lunch meeting at noon Thursday. The meeting will be held at the Costa Mesa Holiday Inn, 3131 Bristol St., Costa Mesa.

Featured will be Dr. Theodore Fortier, DDS, and Oliver Goodall, both members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. The Tuskegee Airmen, a squadron of black pilots, battled at home for the right to fly and aid the war effort for the United States and its allies during World War II. At the time, it was widely thought that black people did not have the ability to be successful military pilots. The Tuskegee Airmen proved that wrong, building the best record of any air squadron flying during the war.

The Tuskegee Airmen luncheon is jointly sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and Holiday Inn. The hotel is sponsoring students from every public upper elementary school in Costa Mesa, and the Kiwanis Club is sponsoring Key Club students from Costa Mesa and Estancia high schools and Circle K students from Orange Coast College.

The $75 ticket includes VIP seating. Call club member Steve Pool at (949) 642-0621 for tickets.

KIWANIS GOOFERS GOLF

The Costa Mesa Kiwanis held its fourth annual golf tournament Sept. 18. The beneficiary of the tournament was Adopt a Social Worker. Fifty golfers, or goofers as Charlie Markel likes to call them, enjoyed a round of golf on the Mesa Linda Course at the Costa Mesa Country Club. Long driver Kyle Wilson was stationed at the 12th hole and gave the golfers the option of hitting his drive as their second shot or using their own drive. According to Markel, all golfers opted to use Wilson’s drive. After the golf, players adjourned to the Newport Rib Company for dinner and auction. The next tournament will be on Sept. 17, 2007, and the beneficiary will be the Harbor Area Boys and Girls Club.
