NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL WRAP-UP

Here are a few items the council considered Tuesday.

MARINAPARK PLAN

The council heard about progress on plans for the Marinapark property. A design that includes grassy areas, a sailing center and public docks was tentatively approved by members of American Legion Post 291, which sits next to the park. The legion’s facilities would be rearranged to create more public dock space, but the city has assured legion members they won’t lose any amenities.

As it turned out Tuesday, council members didn’t need to vote to go forward, because several have worked on the current plan and the others have expressed support. Once the park is fully designed, building it could take two to three years. The city also has yet to resolve legal issues with residents of mobile homes now on the park site and a hotel designer whose resort plan was rejected by voters in 2004.

WHAT IT MEANS

The city will create a more detailed design for a public park and marina. Community outreach also will be part of the design phase, which could take about six months.

WIRELESS INTERNET

The city will seek proposals from Internet providers for wireless fidelity, or Wi-Fi, service. Interested companies would be offered nonexclusive franchises to place Internet transmitters on city-owned light poles.

City officials said residents benefit from Wi-Fi because if they subscribe, they have Internet access anywhere in the city, and the city might get a break on its service.

WHAT IT MEANS

The city will ask for proposals from wireless Internet companies, due Nov. 21.
