NEWPORT BEACH — For the second time this season, the Sailors lost in a tie on games in a key Sunset League match Tuesday.

Newport (8-3, 3-3 in league) had two 5-7 losses in doubles that were costly. Alex McIntosh and Emily Gelbaum collected two sets each in singles.

Singles -- McIntosh (NH) lost to Nafrette, 1-6, def. Dales, 6-2, def. Zamboes, 6-1; Gelbaum (NH) 2-6, 6-2, 6-1; Heimstaedt 1-6, 1-6, 6-4.

Doubles -- Sowers-Small (NH) lost to Moore-Lim, 1-6, lost to Lee-Geharger, 3-6, def. Mar-Skaritt, 6-2; Schwartz-Dunlap (NH) 5-7, 6-3, 6-3; Sigalos-Shea (NH),5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

NEWPORT BEACH — The doubles teams of Alle Hsu and Jaclyn Smrecek, Carissa Cummings and Allison Smart, and Erica Spivack and Brina Dokich, combined to sweep nine sets in the Lightning’s Academy League win at the Balboa Bay Racquet Club Tuesday.

Doubles -- Hsu-Smrecek (SH) def. Pringle-Pearce, 6-0, def. Ransom-Nkansah, 6-0, def. Lounsberry-Johnson, 6-0; Cummings-Smart (SH) won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1; Spivack-Dokich (SH) won, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0.

FIELD HOCKEY

Newport Harbor 3, Edison 0

NEWPORT BEACH — Samantha Hill scored 16 minutes in to get the Sailors started in their Sunset League victory at Harper Community Center Tuesday.

Kyleigh Harrison and Jackie Harrison scored a goal each in the second half. Rachel Foster assisted on Sanchez’s goal for the Sailors (6-1).

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Lauren Draganza shot seven-over-par 43 to lead the Sailors in the Sunset League match on Tuesday at Meadowlark Golf Club.

Also scoring for Newport Harbor were Tiffany Kim (45), Kendall Horn (46), Ali Thomas (49) and Brittany Phillips (50).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sage Hill def. Whitney

CERRITOS — Junior Colleen Heyler had 12 kills in the 25-15, 25-12, 25-23 Academy League win for the Lightning on Tuesday.

Lindsey Kish had four kills, Kelsey Lawler added 22 assists and Mackenzie Bronk had three kills and three service aces for Sage Hill (7-14, 3-2 in league).

Estancia def. Calvary Chapel

SANTA ANA — Annie Tomasek recorded 17 kills in the Eagles’ 21-25, 25-15, 25-10, 25-23, Orange Coast League victory Tuesday.

Olivia Schow added 11 kills for Estancia (16-7, 3-1 in league). Stacie Watson dished 37 assists, Jaye Hellmich had two blocks and Katie Hartwell had 14 digs.

SURFING

Newport Harbor 90, Dana Hills 78

DANA HILLS — Mark Contreras notched his second first-place finish in the Sailors’ South Coast League victory Tuesday at Salt Creek.

Newport, which had not defeated Dana Hills the past two years, are off to a 2-0 start.

The Sailors defeated the previously unbeaten Dana Hills short board team, 48-36. Victor Done had the high wave score of the day with a 5.9. Christian Morabito, Chris LoMenzo and Charlie Buckingham each placed second in their respective heats.

The girls’ short board team’s road to a 13-6 victory was led by freshman Kaleigh Gilchrist. Matt Kretschmar finished second in body boarding, which lost, 12-9. LoMenzo took second in the boys’ long board.
