Hayes fourth at county meet

Edison High’s Hillary Hayes kept pace with the county’s best Saturday at the Orange County Championships cross-country event at Irvine Park.

The sophomore ran to a fourth-place finish in 17 minutes 35 seconds in the girls’ varsity Sweepstakes Race at the 40th annual county championships, hosted by Foothill High.

Huntington Beach High picked up its third Sea View League win by defeating El Toro, 12-6.

Oilers doubles players Jennifer Heumann and Stacy Kaufman earned sweeps and No. 3 Monica Stupaczuk won two of three in singles. In doubles, Huntington’s No. 1 team of Christina Le and Diana Le also swept.

In girls’ volleyball:

Huntington Beach stepped out of Sea View League action Saturday to travel north to Santa Barbara for a match at San Marcos. The visiting Oilers pulled out a 20-25, 25-16, 18-25, 30-28, 15-12 victory over the Lions.

Lindsay Benac tallied 13 kills, Tori Thompson had 36 assists and 16 digs, Chrissy Vandoornum finished with 11 digs, 10 kills and two aces, Kellie Turner contributed six blocks and 10 kills and Kayln Klaess added 10 digs, as the Oilers improved to 6-11 overall.

In Previous Sea View League action, Huntington fell to both Woodbridge (26-24, 25-27, 12-25, 26-24, 8-15) and El Toro (23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20).
