MUSTANGS WIN TOURNEY

The Costa Mesa High frosh/soph boys water polo team won the 12-team Capistrano Valley Novice Tournament on Oct. 14.

Ashkan Nasiri scored two goals to help lead the Mustangs to a 4-2 win over Dana Hills in the title game. Dane Shambrook and Chingiz Bigalmov scored one goal each.

“We have an eight-man squad, and six out of the eight have been playing for four months or less,” Mesa Coach Justin Taylor said. “This is a great achievement for them.”

The Mustangs also defeated Capistrano Valley, 6-3, in the semifinals, and also took out Tesoro, 10-3, and Capistrano Valley’s “B” team, 13-6.

Taylor also said Travis Wright played well defensively, and Marlow Asuang, Hung Nguyen and Joey Dinh also contributed to the victories

NEWPORT WINS TOURNEY

Sophomore Chelsea McDonald scored three goals in three games and freshman Avery Amies and sophomore Ali Uhl shared the Most Valuable Player honor as the Newport Harbor High frosh/soph team upset the Sailors junior varsity, 2-0, to win the Orange County Invitational on Oct. 7.

Newport Harbor’s frosh/soph squad won three games in the 10-team tournament which was designed for levels other than varsity.

The Sailors defeated Marina, 2-0, first with goals from McDonald and sophomore Terra Giacomaro.

They then toppled Westminster, 2-0, with freshman Kimmy Ramser and McDonald doing the scoring.

After the first two games, the Sailors were tied with Edison and to see which team advanced to the championship, the two went to penalty strokes.

After six from the Sailors had missed and seven from Edison, freshman Leslie Drewry popped a goal in the back of the net to send the team to the championship.

First-year coach and former Newport Harbor player Jenny Taylor said she knew at that moment her frosh/soph team would win the title.

Also playing well for the Sailors were freshmen defenders Devon Williams, Lauren Randolf and Lauren Chandler. Assisting from the midfield were freshman Kate Randolph, Julie Kapelke and Christy Jacobs.

At the forwards were freshmen Amy Kanotz and Caroline Hardenbergh.
