Contention time

It’s jockeying time on the football field.

With league races entering the halfway point this week, four local teams will be looking to get back into championship contention. Marina starts the week’s local action by taking to the road tonight, while Edison, Huntington Beach and Ocean View go under the lights Friday.

Tonight’s game:

Marina (1-6, 0-2) vs. Los Alamitos (6-1, 2-0)

(at Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.)

Los Alamitos gets the favorite’s nod in this one, as the Sunset League enters its third week of competition.

Marina is 0-2 in Sunset League play after last week’s 38-14 loss to Fountain Valley. Jimmy Irvin scored both touchdowns for the Vikings, one on a pass from Tim Atencio.

Although Los Alamitos is the lone undefeated team in league play, getting to the top of the standings has been anything but easy for the Griffins. First, they survived Fountain Valley, the difference being a blocked extra-point attempt in a 7-6 victory. Last week, Los Al needed a field goal in the fourth quarter to escape Newport Harbor, 9-7.

Before entering league play, the Griffins offense had averaged 36 points a game.

Los Al’s lone loss is a 38-27 setback on Sept. 28 to Orange Lutheran.

Last year’s score: Griffins 26, Vikings 0

Friday’s games:

Newport Harbor (4-3, 1-1) vs. Edison (5-2, 1-1)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

A one-time Sunset League rivalry is renewed when the Sailors take on the Chargers at Cap Sheue Field.

Both teams need a victory to stay in the hunt for the Sunset crown, as both are coming off their first league defeats.

Edison fell, 38-0, to Esperanza on Friday. The loss marked the first time a Chargers team had been shut out since a 21-0 loss to Long Beach Poly in the second-round of the 2003 CIF playoffs. The loss also was the most one-sided defeat for Edison since a 52-14 setback in 1998 to Los Alamitos.

A newcomer to the league, Newport Harbor has shown it fits right in the Sunset after the first two weeks of league play. On Oct. 13, the Sailors surprised Esperanza, 21-13. Last week, Newport gave Los Alamitos all it could handle before falling, 9-7, on a fourth-quarter field goal.

The schools first met on the football field in 1974 and played annually when Newport Harbor was a member of the Sunset League through 1980. The Sailors and Chargers, however, have not played each other since that 1980 season.

The series

1974: Sailors 17, Chargers 17

1975: Sailors 21, Chargers 3

1976: Chargers 28, Sailors 14

1977: Sailors 17, Chargers 14

1978: Chargers 13, Sailors 10

1979: Sailors 17, Chargers 13

1980: Chargers 38, Sailors 6

(Newport Harbor leads, 4-3)

Huntington Beach (5-2; 1-1) vs. El Toro (4-3; 2-0)

(at Trabuco Hills High, 7 p.m.)

Huntington Beach ventures to Trabuco Hills High for a second time this year to meet Sea View League foe El Toro.

The Oilers, who played at Trabuco Hills to open league play on Oct. 13, are coming off their most thorough victory of the year, a 24-0 shutout of Northwood. Johnny Olivé rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown, Stephen Gabbard and Justin Niutapuai each rushed for a score and Clayton Prestrige connected on a 32-yard field goal for the Oilers.

The shutout victory was the first for a Huntington team in more than five years.

A victory Friday against co-league leader El Toro would put Huntington right back in the title chase. The Chargers, who previously defeated Northwood, 28-14, on Oct. 12, took care of Woodbridge on Friday, 42-0. El Toro’s rushing attack netted 350 yards and Nick DeBeaubien and Jai Morris each rushed for two touchdowns.

The teams did not meet last year.

Ocean View (2-5, 1-1) vs. Westminster (4-3, 2-0)

(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)

Friday marks the first road game for Ocean View in a month, and it’s a game the Seahawks need if they wish to stay in contention for the Golden West League title.

Ocean View suffered its first league setback last week to Saddleback, 35-13. The Seahawks struck first in that game but five interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, doomed them.

Quarterback Dana Maley scored both Ocean View touchdowns.

Westminster shares the league’s top spot with Saddleback, as both are the remaining undefeated teams in league play. The Lions last week took care of Segerstrom, 41-14, a team Ocean View rallied to defeat (28-21) on Oct. 13. Six different players scored touchdowns for the Lions, who own a victory this year against Huntington Beach.

Last year’s score: Lions 36, Seahawks 15
