SURFING SOAPBOX:Thanks to those who help

There are those who contribute and there are those who sit back and complain, adding nothing in the way of solutions or contributions “” either physically or monetarily. These people sit back like a broken, old record skipping and replaying the same old song time and time again.

Luckily for us, Laguna has some great people helping our cause in the way of cleaning up our beaches and striving to keep the integrity of our town intact.

Sadly, next week will mark my last Environmental Committee meeting. This is a group of people who have dedicated themselves and their spare time become an environmental watchdog for this town.

The amount of knowledge I have gained from this experience has been nothing short of an honor.

In thinking about this committee, I marvel at the level of enthusiasm and hard work that these people are willing to give to the environmental causes they believe in.

One such person is Roger Butow, the man behind the Clean Water Now! Coalition that administers our beach clean-ups here in town. His level of commitment is unbelievable. Almost single-handily, on a shoestring budget, he seemingly strings together one clean-up after another.

The next one will be Dec. 9.

However, there is good news as surf wear giant Volcom recently made a donation to help with the funding for these beach clean-up programs.

So, thank you, Volcom.

Also deserving a big thank you is the Laguna Beach City Council, which also recently made a donation.

Other companies that have contributed donations include the Montage Resort and Spa, The Athens Group, the Laguna Beach Visitors & Conference Bureau, Wild Oats, Soul Surfing and The Aloha School of Surfing.

Thank you for caring about our wonderful town.

Peace.
