Landon Michael Dorris, an officer for the Los Angeles Police Department who lived in Newport Beach, was buried at Pacific View Memorial Park on Friday following his death in the line of duty earlier this week.

Dorris, 31, died early Sunday morning when he was hit by a car while investigating a traffic accident.

Officer Norma Eisenman said no arrest had been made in Dorris’ death and that the driver most likely had been unable to see him.

On Friday morning, a funeral service for Dorris was held at Our Lady of the Angels church in Los Angeles. Shortly after noon, the police and California Highway Patrol held a processional to Pacific View Memorial Park, with Dorris’ family and more than 100 officers gathering to pay their respects. Police cars stretched around the cemetery as other officers sat on horseback, and flower wreaths lay around Dorris’ silver coffin. Afterward, a private memorial service was held.

Dorris, who grew up in Fortuna, had been an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department for three years. Before that, he had served for three years with the Highway Patrol. His city of residence had been a beloved spot, according to Officer Gina Onweiler.

“He wanted to retire at the beach,” she said. “He loved the beach.”

Friends of his family have set up a trust fund to support Dorris’ two young sons. Eisenman said the Police Department will also assist the family.
