Cup Invitational

SAN JOSE — Newport Harbor High advanced to the semifinals by beating St. Francis, 6-5, then getting a quarterfinal win over Miramonte, 5-4, at Lynbrook High.

Collin Sherman scored his fourth overtime game-winner of the season for the Sailors against Miramonte, on a pass from set from Riley Hayes.

Blake Hockenbury added two goals in the quarterfinal win.

The Sailors (18-4) play either Los Alamitos or Harvard-Westlake in the semifinals today.

SAN JOSE — Corona del Mar High also advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, posting a 10-7 win over Bellarmine and a 11-9 win over Jesuit.

Mike Berry had nine combined goals in the two wins, and Brian Peotter had 19 combined saves.

Corona del Mar plays Menlo in the tournament semifinals today.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Danny O’Neil had a career-high six goals for the Eagles in the nonleague game Friday.

Estancia goalie Kyle Lux scored from the length of the pool at the buzzer of the first three-minute overtime, a 73-foot shot.

Estancia (1-18) led by two goals with just more than three minutes left in regulation, but the Lobos rallied to force the extra sessions.

SANTA ANA — Costa Mesa High split in its two consolation games of the tourney Friday, beating Santa Ana, 10-7, and losing to Saddleback, 11-8.

Sam Edman scored five goals in the two games and John Roche scored four.

Scott Neslage finished with 27 saves for the Mustangs (10-15).

CERRITOS — Stephanie Langer swept in singles without dropping a game, while Sarah Geocaris also swept giving up just one set in the Lightning’s Academy League victory.

Allie Hsu and Jaclyn Smrecek swept in doubles, dropping just two games for Sage (17-1, 10-0 in league), the top-ranked team in Division IV that clinched at least a share of the league title.

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor swept Catholic Cathedral, but lost to Long Beach Wilson in five games in a quarterfinal match Friday.

Megan Toman recorded nine kills and Katie Wells seven in the Sailors’ 25-13, 25-16, 25-14 win over Catholic Cathedral of San Diego. Alesha Young added 37 assists and two aces.

Toman came back with 16 kills and Megan Munce contributed 15, when Wilson won, 20-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 15-12. Jamie Heenan had 11 kills, Wells finished with nine kills.

SANTA BARBARA — Kasey Kipp recorded 46 kills in the two games Corona del Mar High split Friday.

Kelly Christian added 35 kills, as the Sea Kings beat Centennial of Bakersfield, 25-7, 25-17, 22-25, 27-25, yet lost to Santa Barbara 28-26, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21. Jamie Lawson finished with 48 assists in the two games.

The Sea Kings (18-4) will face Buchanan of Clovis in a fifth-place semifinal today.

Estancia def. Calvary Chapel

COSTA MESA — Senior Jaye Hellmich, who was later named homecoming queen Friday night, had 13 kills to lead the Eagles to a 25-17, 25-23, 28-26 Orange Coast League triumph that clinched a berth in the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs.

The Eagles (18-8, 7-2 in league) are assured of no worse than second place in the four-team league, with just two league contests remaining.

Junior Olivia Schow contributed 11 kills for the winners, who received 19 digs from Amanda Watson and 25 assists from senior setter Stacie Watson.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Junior outside hitter Colleen Heyler produced 21 kills and four aces in the Lighting’s 28-26, 22-25, 25-13, 27-25 Academy League victory Friday.

Mackenzie Bronk added six kills and four aces, and Lindsey Kish 36 assists for Sage Hill (9-15, 5-3 in league).
