COLLEGE ROUNDUP:Pirates earn pair of crowns

ORANGE — The Orange Coast College men’s and women’s cross country teams won the Orange Empire Conference Championships Saturday at Irvine Park.

The OCC women, the five-time defending state champion, dominated, as five of their runners finished in the top seven.

Elda Hernandez led the Pirates, winning the individual title in 19 minutes, 29.69 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. Erindira Uriostegui followed in second (19:32.27), and Kelly Oelschlager was third (19:36.46).

Kristin Glen (fifth in 20:20.93), Kimberly Jennings (seventh in 20:39.95) and Claire Fleming (13th in 21:37.44) also stood out for OCC.

On the men’s side, Ernesto Castaneda led the Pirates with a fourth-place finish in 21:12.88 on the four-mile course. Martin Bernard (fifth in 21:13.29), Travis Foerster (eighth in 21:48.85), Alfonso Silvas (13th in 22:07.07) and Nick St. Andre (14th in 22:10.98) also contributed.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Cal Poly SLO

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Lauren Kellerman recorded 22 kills and 10 digs in the Anteaters’ 24-30, 16-30, 32-30, 30-25, 15-13 Big West Conference upset over the No. 19-ranked team Saturday.

UCI’s McCall Miller contributed 11 kills and a career-high 22 digs, as the Anteaters (8-14, 3-5 in conference) dealt the Mustangs (17-5, 9-1) their first home loss and first conference loss of the season. UCI also snapped Cal Poly’s 10-match winning streak.

Taryn Robertson amassed 54 assists, six kills, two aces and eight digs, while Devon Sutherland contributed 28 digs for the Anteaters, who won at UC Santa Barbara in five games Friday. It was the Anteaters’ first win at the Thunderdome.

CROSS COUNTRY

Big West Conference Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The UC Irvine men’s and women’s cross country teams placed third at the Big West Conference Championships Saturday.

UCI’s Ricky Barnes finished sixth in 26 minutes, 16.1 seconds and was named all-conference.

Nick Mosey (13th in 26:55), Sky Johnston (30th in 27:48), Matt Grilli (34th in 28:03) and John Kluve (35th in 28:11) also competed.

Laura Olvera came in second in 21:23 and Sara Mickelson third (21:30), to earn all-conference honors.

Marie Nguyen (12th in 22:54), Emily Romo (29th in 23:53) and Megan Fairley (31st in 24:07) also ran for the Anteaters.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 1, UC Davis 0

IRVINE — Kenny Shoeni had four saves to earn his school single-season record eighth shutout for the Anteaters in a nonconference game Saturday.

The Anteaters (12-3-3) tied the school record for wins in one season. J.T. Terrazas scored his first career goal for UCI.

SANTA CLARITA — Dane Gallion and Kantey Loca-Adamagan scored in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Anthony Burrola, Darin Devore and Tom Culver had assists.
