TruWest Memorial Cup Invitational

SAN JOSE — Newport Harbor High lost in the championship game to Menlo, 6-4, at Bellarmine High on Saturday.

Clinton Jorth scored two goals in the title game of the 16-team tourney, and Colin McKibbin and Collin Sherman also added goals for Newport Harbor (19-5). Bryce McLain made 10 saves.

In the semifinal earlier Saturday, the Sailors pulled away from a halftime tie to defeat Harvard-Westlake, 7-5.

McKibbin and Jorth both scored two goals, and Brandon Parole, Blake Hockenbury and Sherman also scored.

SAN JOSE — Corona del Mar fell in the tournament semifinals to Menlo, 7-3, on Saturday at Bellarmine High.

Ryan Hultman scored two goals for the Sea Kings (16-8), and Omar Mobarek scored the other. Brian Peotter made 12 saves for Corona del Mar.

Sunset League Finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s boys and girls cross country teams both finished in third place Saturday and advanced to the CIF preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College on Nov. 11.

Senior Melissa Mead led the Sailors with a fourth-place finish in 18 minutes 20 seconds. Taylor Bryson followed in fifth (18:32).

Desiree Alexander (eigth in 18:43)), Sophia Ditty (ninth in 18:48), Lauren Maddox (24th in 19:53), Kelly DeYoung (27th in 20:10) and Jennifer Cain (28th in 20:21) also contributed. Fountain Valley won the league title.

Rex Nelson finished fourth for the boys in 16:03. Mike Puncel took fifth in 16:06. Jake Dawson (12th in 16:24), Murphy Hitchcock (22nd in 16:50), Carlo Urquidez (30th in 17:11), Michael Taylor (32nd in 17:15) and Scott Figueora (34th in 17:30) also competed for the Sailors.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions

SANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor High won two matches on Saturday, finishing in fifth place after a 25-21, 26-24, 25-19 win over Buchanan of Clovis.

Senior Megan Toman had 12 kills for the Sailors (19-5), and Katie Wells added six kills and two solo blocks. Wells was named to the all-tournament team.

Earlier Saturday, the Sailors outlasted Torrey Pines, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18. Toman and Wells had 14 kills each, and Jamie Heenan had 11 kills, 11 digs and three service aces.

Alex Penewell had seven kills against Torrey Pines, and Megan Munce added four.
