HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Sage Hill boys and girls win

ORANGE — Junior Connor Rose and sophomore Cait Williamson won boys’ and girls’ individual titles, respectively, helping lead the Sage Hill School boys and girls teams to Academy League cross country titles at Irvine Regional Park Tuesday.

It was the first league championship for the girls and the first for the boys since 2003.

Rose, who came in at 16 minutes, 17 seconds, finished four seconds ahead of his rival, Cole Pavlovic of St. Margaret’s, which came in second as a team. Sean McElroy (third in 16:41), Lion Wintemute, (fifth in 17:30), Kyle Simon (13th in 18:08) and Conrad Whitaker (14th in 18:09) also contributed to the league title.

Williamson finished in 19:32 to lead a 1-2-3 finish that included teammates Aiyana Borownicki (19:37) and Katie McKeon (20:09), who helped Sage narrowly defeat St. Margaret’s 28-26. Kara Percival (21:04) came in ninth and Erica Faris (21:25) was 13th.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Southern team Divisional

CHINO — Jessica Milner tallied a team-best of 12-over-par 84, but Corona del Mar High finished seventh out of 16 teams and missed moving on by three strokes.

Also contributing to the Sea Kings’ team score of 443 were Cierra Gaytan-Leach with an 86, Jonna Kim (87), Courtney Wright (91), Kelly Moorhead (95). Katherine Hanson fired a 96 for CdM.

CHINO — Taylor West led Estancia High with a 14-over-par 86 at the team Southern Divisional of the Sectional CIF Championship Tuesday at El Prado Golf Course.

The Eagles shot 463 as a team to finish 10th in the 16-team field. The top four schools advance to the Southern Section Regional.

Caroline Clements (88), Lina You (90), Bridget Gleason (99) and Kim Haycraft (100) also scored.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. University

IRVINE — The Sea Kings won, 25-22, 25-18, 25-13, at University High Tuesday to finish off an undefeated Pacific Coast League season.

In her first match back from injury, senior Juliane Piggott had 11 kills and 14 digs for Corona del Mar (19-6, 8-0 in league). Kelly Christian had 14 kills, 16 assists, three aces, five digs and two blocks for the Sea Kings.

Kasey Kipp had 10 kills, Madison Smith added nine digs and Jamie Lawson 21 assists for CdM.

Newport Harbor def. Marina

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Sailors swept Marina, 25-15, 25-13, 25-19, in a Sunset League match on Tuesday behind senior Katie Wells’ 13 kills and three solo blocks.

Alesha Young had 11 digs and 30 assists, Megan Munce and Megan Toman each had 10 kills and Katie Regan had three service aces for Newport Harbor (20-5, 7-2 in league).

Newport Harbor needs to win to gain a share of the league title when it plays host to Los Alamitos (8-1 in league) Thursday.

Sage Hill 17,

Capo Valley Christian 1

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — The Lightning clinched their third straight Academy League title Tuesday.

Alle Hsu and Jaclyn Smrecek swept their sets in doubles and they need another sweep Thursday to finish undefeated in league for the Lightning (18-1, 12-0 in league, who face CVC again at Balboa Bay Racquet Club on Thursday.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Sage Hill 10, Estancia 3

COSTA MESA — Jimmy Miller scored three goals for the Lightning and Beau Caillouette, Perry Pang and Tucker Pettis added two each in their Orange Coast League finale at Estancia High on Wednesday.

Sage Hill (18-3, 4-2) has clinched second place in league and an automatic CIF Southern Section Division II playoff berth.

Tyler Wayman had two goals for Estancia (2-19, 0-6).

Josh Young scored once and Kyle Lux had 10 saves for the Eagles, who defeated La Quinta 15-8 on Monday. Lux made 19 saves in that win and Wayman scored eight goals.

NEWPORT BEACH — Clinton Jorth scored six goals to lead the Sailors in a nonleague game Tuesday at Newport Harbor High.

Blake Hockenbury and Zach Osadche each scored three goals and Myles Christian made nine saves for Newport (19-5), which plays its Sunset League finale tonight at home against Marina.

LAGUNA NIGUEL — The girls’ short board team of Kaleigh Gilchrist, Camille Collett and Hailey Sandberg swept the top three spots in order, keeping the Sailors undefeated in the division and leading the team to a 96-66 South Coast League victory over Laguna Beach Tuesday at Salt Creek Beach.

Hannah Patrick led the Sailors’ girls’ long board team to a 12-6 victory with a second-place finish. Chris Lomenzo finished in first place in the boys’ long board for the third time this season for a 15-6 victory. Matt Kretschmar also finished first in body boarding for the third time this season, leading to a 13-8 victory for the Sailors (3-1).

Mark Contreras and Christian Morabito each finished first in the short board competition which the Sailors lost 43-41.
