SURFING SOAPBOX:Thumbs up for voting

Last Monday evening was my last as a member of the Environmental Committee, and I’m happy to report that the group has been left in good hands, judging by last week’s turnout in which a number of people spoke during the public comments portion of the meeting.

All the speakers challenged our great town to become more environmentally focused. Given that more and more people are getting involved by taking part and voicing their opinion in how to do just that, this is a great step in the right direction.

Also unveiled were the new storm drain signs that artistically depict a moment in the ocean, captured in different shades of blue with a school of orange fish, a seal, dolphin, octopus and a starfish.

Fittingly it reads, “Drains to Ocean” and receives this week’s thumbs-up award.

That’s right folks, we’re bringing back the weekly thumbs-up and thumbs-down awards for Laguna Beach.

Which brings us to our next award: this week’s thumbs-down award.

Since this award is voted on by a select committee — namely myself — in keeping with next week’s election, my thumbs-down award will be going to those of you who choose not to vote.

Locally speaking, there are three open seats available for our Laguna Beach City Council that will be voted on Tuesday. So get out and vote.

My hope is that our younger generations will also begin getting involved in our town, not only in voting but attending such committees as the Environmental Committee.

This is your chance to be a voice in bringing positive change to the place we call home.

Peace.
