Costa Mesa High Coach Jeremy Osso was not allowed to coach the Mustangs’ football team Thursday night because of, “a confidential school matter,” the school’s assistant principal Duncan McCulloch said.

McCulloch added that Osso has not been terminated as coach.

“I can tell you that it was a single incident,” McCulloch said. “But I can’t go into what the incident was. Not at this time.”

Offensive coordinator Bill Lux and defensive line coach Nick Romo coached the Mustangs against Calvary Chapel.

McCulloch said Osso, Mesa’s fourth head coach in four years, shouldn’t miss any additional time with the team.

“I expect him back at practice [today],” McCulloch said.

The Mustangs (3-6, 1-1 in the Orange Coast League) defeated Calvary Chapel, 21-14, at Newport Harbor High.

Costa Mesa High boys’ athletic director Tim Postiff would only confirm that Osso was still employed by the school, declining to comment further.

Osso, in his first year as the Mustangs’ head coach, had been an assistant at Mesa, Estancia, Corona del Mar and Beckman before landing his first head coaching job.
