Three teens arrested in connection with shooting

A 21-year-old Costa Mesa man who was shot in the chest and arm remained at Western Medical Center Saturday after police arrested three Costa Mesa teens Friday in connection with the Wednesday shooting on Shalimar Drive, police said.

The ongoing investigation led the Gang Crime Investigation Unit and Special Enforcement Unit to arrest two 17-year-old Costa Mesa gang members at 2:45 p.m. Friday and one other 17-year-old Costa Mesa gang member at 9:45 p.m. Friday for allegedly committing gang crimes and attempted murder, Lt. Dale Birney said. They were booked into the Orange County Juvenile Hall Friday.

The boys’ names were not released because they are juveniles, and the exact locations of their arrests were unknown to Birney. The investigation is ongoing, and Birney did not know if police have identified any other suspects.

Police responded to a call in the 700 block of Shalimar Drive Wednesday night and found a 21-year-old Costa Mesa man shot in the arm and stomach with a shotgun, police said.

The victim was reportedly in his driveway around 7 p.m. Wednesday when the three suspects approached him and asked the victim’s gang affiliation. The victim denied any gang ties, and the suspect reportedly shot him with a shotgun. The victim’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said. Lt. Loren Wyrick of Costa Mesa Police said Saturday the victim is not known to be an active gang member.

Taste wine; help Harbor High School

The Newport Harbor Educational Foundation is holding a wine-tasting fundraiser from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Max in Westcliff.

Tickets for the event, which will feature Californian and Italian wines, are $75 a person and are available at the door. Max is at 1671 Westcliff Dr., in Newport Beach. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Newport Harbor High School.

Search begins for Miss Newport Beach

Young, single Newport Beach women are invited to apply to participate in the new Miss Newport Beach Pageant.

The pageant will be held Sept. 16, 2007. Business sponsorships are also available, and companies can donate goods and services. Sponsorships include a year of marketing and advertising in the community.

The official pageant will determine who will be sent to the Miss California USA pageant in October 2007.
