Region II Championships

FRESNO — Vanguard University’s Grace Jepngetich captured the women’s individual title in 17 minutes, 14 seconds, a school-record, to lead the Lions to a third-place finish at Woodward Park’s 5K course Saturday.

Jepngetich is Vanguard’s first Region II champion. Rebecca Sopp came in 14th in 18:39, to finish on the All-Region II, which includes the top 14.

Jason Valenzuela finished 13th in 25:22 for the Vanguard men, which were seventh.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 78, Carroll 67

HELENA, Mont. — Kevin Dalafu made six of 12 field-goal attempts, including three of five three-pointers and the Lions drilled 12 of 20 three-pointers to win in their second game at the Carroll College Tournament Saturday.

Six different Lions netted threes to help Vanguard improved to 1-1.

COSTA MESA — Shardai Sublett led four Lions in double-figures with 14 kills to key a 30-22, 30-28, 30-24 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Kim Winn (13), Heather DeJongh (12) and Michael Shortridge (11) also helped Breeann Peterson collect 39 assists for Vanguard (14-12, 7-11 in conference).

IRVINE — McCall Miller led the Anteaters with 10 kills in the 49ers’ 30-27, 30-25, 30-10 Big West Conference win Saturday.

Taryn Robertson added 28 assists for UCI (9-15, 4-6 in conference).
