TOLFA TO PRINCETON

Corona del Mar High softball star Michelle Tolfa will raise athletic and academic levels when she attends Princeton.

Tolfa, who is a two-time Newport-Mesa Player of the Year, said Princeton was one of the schools she was looking at before the coaches contacted her, came to watch her play and then asked her to attend Princeton. Ivy League schools do not give athletic scholarships.

“I wanted to go back East and I always wanted to go to an Ivy League school,” Tolfa said. “I’m excited to experience fall and winter. I’ve already gone shopping for scarves and mittens.”

Tolfa, who had a 1.50 ERA and .325 batting average for the Sea Kings last year, was named to the CIF Southern Section Division IV second team for the second straight year as well as being first-team All-Pacific Coast League.

“Princeton takes one pitcher per class,” Tolfa said. “They are looking for me to come in and play outfield and first base not just pitcher.”

Tolfa said having her collegiate future secure, while the majority of high school seniors are submitting applications, is a nice luxury.

“I’m really, really relieved,” Tolfa said.

— Dominic PerroneBYC RAISES MONEY

Over 80 boats sailed at this year’s Balboa Yacht Club CHOC Regatta, held Saturday and Sunday in Newport Harbor. The event, piggy-backed on the first race of the Balboa Yacht Club Sunkist Series, raised over $67,000 in total donations for the Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

The two regattas were sailed at the same time, using the same courses determined by boat class. The little boat fleet raced on Saturday, while the big-boat Performance Handicap Racing Fleet sailed on Sunday.

The regatta has sailed annually since 2000 to raise money for, and to increase community awareness of, the heath care services available at CHOC.

WARD WINS TITLE

Newport Beach resident Jeff Ward wrapped up his second American Motorcross Association Supermoto points title heading into the season’s final race.

To put a stamp on a season in which Ward was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame and winning a gold medal in the X-games the 45-year old won from start to finish over Supermoto points runner-up Doug Henry at Supermoto Championship in Long Beach Sunday.

Ward’s son Brandon Ward, who is a freshman at Newport Harbor High, also won a race Sunday making them the first father-son duo to win a national championship race in the same year.

With 429 total points on the season Jeff Ward finished 36 points head of the second-place Henry. Jeff Ward, who finished 16 points out of first place last season, finished with nine wins in 20 races, finishing out of the top 10 only once. Jeff Ward won his first points title in 2004.

In August Jeff Ward won a Supermoto gold medal at the Summer Xgames to become the oldest male gold medalist in the event’s 12-year history.

Brandon Ward, 14, won the eight-lap Premier mini race.
