WARNER WINS TROPHY
Balboa Island resident Blake Warner, a senior at Calvary Chapel High, won the Single Handed High School National Championship in sailing in the laser class at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, Conn., on Oct. 28.
The regatta, also known as the Cressy Trophy, drew the top high school single-handed sailors from seven regional qualifiers throughout the United States. Other local qualifiers included Charlie Buckingham, Chris Barnard and Michael Menninger, all from Newport Harbor High.
Barnard finished fourth in the laser radial class, and teammate Menninger placed 10th. Buckingham finished eighth in the laser class.
Warner was accompanied at the national championships by his coach, Peter Wells, a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic sailing team.
Warner’s name will be placed on the perpetual trophy permanently on display at the Naval Academy’s Robert Crown Sailing Center, in Annapolis, Md.
Warner, who began sailing competitively at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club in Newport Beach, started the sailing team his freshman year at Calvary Chapel and is the team captain. The team practices at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach.
Warner is currently a junior member at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club and has been sailing competitively for six years.
