No Square holding auditions for music show

No Square Theatre is seeking some “mighty fine” singers for its upcoming country music show, “Radio Whik.”

Auditions will be held one day only from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Bridge Hall, Neighborhood Congregational Church, 340 St. Ann’s Drive.

Auditioners are asked to show up during that time or e-mail director@nosquare.org for an appointment. At the audition, singers will perform a short country song (guitar or fiddle accompaniment is a plus). Singers should allow one hour for the audition and bring music “” a piano player and CD player will be available (no recorded vocals are allowed if a CD is used).

The show, to be held at 8 p.m. Feb. 2 and 3 at Artists’ Theatre, will feature hits by singers like Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash. There will be one rehearsal in early December, and as needed on Jan. 12 and Feb. 1. Performers are unpaid.

Pastel artists honored in Laguna Beach

The United Society of Pastel Artists has announced the winners of its first-annual juried membership exhibit in Laguna Beach.

Professional winners were Evgenia Gennadia, Terry Stanley, Fred Hope, Kathy Esnard and Lyndelle Stonick; honorable mentions went to Laurie Kerr, Joann Quinlivan, Kamillia Hardy, Jean Choi, Fred Eck and Susan Cameron.

Student awards went to Diana Mattis, Jessica Papa and Dori Dewberry. Honorable mentions went to Elizabeth Bowers, Katie Schmid, Kyoung Chung, Joyce Rush, Jim Proett and Anne Scaffidi.

The exhibit, which featured 63 original pieces, ran from Nov. 2 through 6 at the Studio in the Laguna Canyon Artists complex. Awards were announced at a reception on Nov. 4.

‘Sister’s Christmas Catechism’ returns

“Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold” will run at the Laguna Playhouse from Nov. 19 to Dec. 24.

The show, by Maripat Donovan, Marc Silvia and Jane Morris, will run for 13 performances; the two-act solo show will feature Sister giving instruction to a roomful of “students” (the audience).

Sister will give glow-in-the-dark rosaries and other prizes to students who answer correctly; misbehavers will be punished appropriately.

Fred Hope schedules fall exhibition

Artist Fred Hope has announced his second annual fall exhibition, to be held Saturday at his studio at 3275 Laguna Canyon Road.

The exhibit, at the Laguna Canyon Artists Studio Complex, will also feature work by Sheryl Seltzer and Karin Worden.

There will be a reception for the artists from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and the show will continue with viewing from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and by appointment on Monday.

European paintings in group show at Gallery McCollum

A group exhibition featuring new oils and watercolors opens Saturday at Gallery McCollum.

The show will highlight paintings of European scenes by Michael Logan, David Solomon, Michael Obermeyer and Caroline Zimmerman.

The gallery will also offer a wine and cheese pairing by Laguna Culinary Arts.

Opening reception for Tibetan artist Saturday

Mandarin Fine Art Gallery will host an opening reception for Tibetan woman artist Zhou Hua from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at 1294 S. Coast Highway.

Zhou Hua paints Tibetan children. Wine and hors d’oeuvres from Mozambique will be served; Chinese musician Bei Bei will play Guzheng music.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a Tibetan orphanage.

‘Marvelous Party’ wins Chicago award

The team behind “A Marvelous Party: The Noel Coward Celebration,” opening at the Laguna Playhouse on Nov. 18, won four Jeff Equity Awards in Chicago Nov. 6.

The show was devised by David Ira Goldstein, Carl Danielsen, Mark Anders, Patricia Wilcox and Anna Lauris, with musical arrangements by Danielsen.

Festival of Arts launches Diamond Club

The Festival of Arts has created a new Diamond Club donor program to coincide with its 75th anniversary.

The club is restricted to 75 donors on a first-come, first-served basis. Each member will receive 16 center loge tickets to the Pageant of the Masters on any weekday between July 7 and Aug. 30, dinner at Tivoli Terrace before the show, a pre-show private tour of the Festival of Arts Fine Art Exhibition, a private post-performance discussion with Pageant director Diane Challis Davy and 16 commemorative champagne flutes.

In addition, Diamond Club members will receive special recognition in the Pageant of the Masters souvenir program, a 15% discount at the Festival of Arts on-site gift shop and a commemorative Diamond Club art piece designed by artist Kent Kahlen of Newport Beach, whose hand-blown glass vases, urns, bottles and accessories have been exhibited at the Festival of Arts for nine years.

Diamond Club participation is available for a $7,500 contribution, a portion of which is tax-deductible. It is a separate, exclusive donor club and as such does not carry Festival of Arts membership or voting rights.
