NEWPORT BEACH — The Newport Harbor High girls tennis doubles teams meant trouble for Oak Park of Temecula as the Sailors collected eight sets to score the second-round win in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs Saturday.

Chrissy Schwartz and Natalie Small, the Sailors’ No. 1 doubles team, swept as did Newport’s No. 3 tandem Avalon Sagalos and Allie Shea. The doubles effort, combined with three wins in singles from Alex McIntosh, Emily Gelbaum and Kristina Heimstadt helped deal Oak Park of Temucula its first loss of the season. The Wolfpack, in their third year as a school, ended the year at 19-1.

“We all came out really fired up and we were all ready to play and we all really wanted it,” Schwartz said. “We were the underdog. We all knew we could do it.”

Sasha Dunlap and Brittany Sowers posted two wins in doubles.

Dunlap and Schwartz were also doubles teammates during the regular season.

Dunlap teamed with Schwartz to finish second in doubles in the Sunset League, and McIntosh finished second in the tough league.

The Sailors said their regular-season losses to Los Alamitos, which twice were decided by games, built character for them. The adversity strengthened them and they were able to overcome an undefeated team Saturday.

Assistant coach Brooke Taylor said the Sailors’ resolve and their ability to improve their play has them ready for the quarterfinals.

“If this is a time to peak, they sure picked the right timem to peak,” Taylor said. “We picked it up after the first round.”

It was tied 3-3 after the first round, but Newport stepped it up.

Newport Harbor (13-5) will take on Santa Barbara in a quarterfinal Tuesday at a site to be determined by coin flip Monday. Santa Barbara defeated El Dorado, 14-4, Saturday.

CORONA DEL MAR — The CIF Division I second-round matchup featuring Newport-Mesa District teams proved to be lopsided in the Sea Kings’ favor, but CdM Coach Brian Ricker held respect for the Eagles and their coach, Rachel de los Santos.

“I was a coach at Laguna Beach before Rachel was [at Estancia],” Ricker said of the coach in her sixth year with the Eagles. “She’s completely changed it. The kids have pride in their program. It’s been a complete turnaround since she’s been there. She deserves a lot of the credit.”

CdM (21-0), the top-seeded squad which featured a sweep with no games dropped from Melissa Matsuoka and Lindsay Zotovich in No. 2 doubles, will face Harvard-Westlake Tuesday in a quarterfinal. A coin flip Monday will determine the site. Harvard-Westlake defeated Tesoro, 80-78 on games after a 9-9 tie.

Jill Damion played just one set Saturday, scoring a 6-1 win over Estancia’s Ellie Edles.

Danielle Kaiden substituted in to win two, while Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Hailey Hogan swept in singles for the Pacific Coast League champions.

Estancia ends the season at 13-6.

Sage Hill 18, St. Joseph 0 LAKEWOOD — The top-seeded Lightning posted their second shutout in a row to improve to 21-1 after the second-round victory in the CIF Division IV playoffs. Stephanie Langer didn’t lose a game in her sweep in singles, while Sarah Geocaris and Ashley Adams also won three each.

Sage Hill Coach A.G. Longoria said Cummings and Smrecek rested and should be back next week. The Lightning, the Academy League champions who have been ranked at No. 1 in the division all season, will take on Walnut Tuesday in a quarterfinal, with the site being determined by coin flip Monday.

“I’m surprised,” Longoria said. “We didn’t have any shutouts during the season and now we have two. I hope we can keep this up.”
