Argument over ball cap sparks bar brawl

A New York Yankees cap might have incited a brawl this weekend outside the Triangle Square Yardhouse in Costa Mesa, leaving one man unconscious and another twice stabbed, police said.

Alfonso Rodrigo Cedillo, 25, of Costa Mesa confronted Rafael Palma, 19, about the Yankees cap he was wearing outside the bar at 2:21 p.m. Sunday, police said. The dispute eventually led Cedillo to beat up Palma, police said.

Palma pulled out a four-inch pocket knife and stabbed Cedillo during the attack, Sgt. Greg Scott said.

“While he’s being beaten he defensively stabbed the attacker,” Scott said.

Cedillo walked away, apparently unaware he was stabbed, when Palma lost consciousness, police said. When Cedillo realized he had been stabbed he returned to continue beating Palma, Scott said.

Cedillo was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. His wounds were not life-threatening, police said. Palma was treated at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach for minor wounds to the head, police said.

No one was arrested, but the investigation is ongoing, police said.

SWAT team gets man to surrender

SWAT officers resolved a barricade situation peacefully Saturday night after Newport Beach police officers tried to contact a man wanted by Colorado Spring police.

At 8 p.m. Newport Beach officers, acting on behalf of Colorado Springs police, attempted to contact Shawn Brack at his home on 38th Street. Colorado Springs police allege that Brack made threatening phone calls to someone in Colorado Springs, police said.

Brack, who was once a member of the U.S. Olympic “Shotgun” Team, refused to come out of his home, seeming to become very agitated when Newport officers contacted him, police said. He later threatened to kill officers during the negotiations with police, authorities said.

Several hours later, the suspect came out of the home and surrendered without incident, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of felony threats.

Gun warning at airport is false alarm

A passenger suspected of being armed at John Wayne Airport Friday night caused airport authorities to evacuate both terminals, but it turned out to be a false alarm and things were back to normal the next day.

At about 6 p.m. reports of a man reportedly pulling a weapon from his bag near Terminal B convinced authorities to search both terminals, airport authorities said.

“There was a man suspected of carrying a prohibited item, whether or not it was a gun was never confirmed,” airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge said.

Authorities found the man with nothing on him, Wedge said. So everyone was moved out of both terminals around 7:15 p.m. by Transportation Security Administration officials who searched the departure areas. Then they had passengers go through screening again, Wedge said.

Nine flights were delayed and at least two were canceled, although two planes that had already been boarded were allowed to take off, Wedge said.

By about 9:30 p.m., everyone was allowed back into the terminals. It’s possible another passenger reported the man with a weapon, but it is unsure at this time, Wedge said.
