Seasons end for tennis and polo
The season ended last weekend for the Laguna Beach High girls’ tennis and boys’ water polo teams as they fell in recent CIF-Southern Section playoff action.
Girls’ Tennis
Defending Division I champion Laguna won its first-round playoff match on Nov. 9 against San Clemente, 10-8, but Troy eliminated Laguna 15-3 in the second round on Nov. 11.
In the first-round win over San Clemente, the Breakers, winners of the Orange Coast League, received sweeps from its No. 1 singles player Lyndsay Kinstler and its top doubles team of Lauren Thigpen/Sarah Russell.
Winning two of three for the Breakers were Madeline Jaeger at No. 2 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Heather Tran/McKenna Nokes.
San Clemente was in third-place in the South Coast League.
Against Freeway League champion Troy, Kinstler won two of three.
Boys’ Water Polo
In its first-round match of the Division II playoffs on Nov. 10, Orange Coast League champion Laguna fell to visiting San Clemente, 15-14, a team it had handled in the regular season.
The Tritons entered the playoffs as the No. 2 team out of the South Coast League.
The Breakers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one quarter, but they were outscored, 9-5, by the Tritons over the next two quarters and trailed, 10-8, heading into the fourth quarter.
Pierre Masson and Peter Phelps each scored four goals to lead Laguna. Cameron Brinkman posted three goals , Nathan McConnell two and Johnny Holcomb had one.
On Sept. 26, also at the Laguna pool, the Breakers rolled to a 14-5 victory over San Clemente.
