JACKSON, Tenn. — Rachel Besse scored the game-winner with one second left, lifting the top-ranked Vanguard University women’s basketball team to a 68-66 opening-round victory over No. 25 Lambuth Thursday night at the Jackson Rotary Classic in Jackson, Tenn.

Besse, who finished with 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks, received the ball on an out-of-bounds lob from Kelly Schmidt with four seconds remaining. Besse, a center, used her 6-foot-3 frame well before laying the ball in with her left hand to help the Lions improve to 2-0.

“We were really tired, and (Lambuth) is a real physical team,” Vanguard Coach Russ Davis said during a phone interview. “We have another tough one (today) against Freed-Hardeman, which is ranked seventh in the country.”
