Newport Beach City Council wrap-up

Here are some items the council considered Tuesday.

MARINAPARK DESIGN

The firm that designed the preliminary plan for the city-owned Marinapark property will work on the next phase of the project, the council decided. Rabben/Herman Design Office of Newport Beach was granted an $85,000 contract to conduct public outreach and draw more detailed designs.

The current plans include a park with a tot lot, a sailing center, and a public marina for visiting boats. Building it all could cost at least $12 million, and no funding has yet been found. Members of American Legion Post 291, adjacent to Marinapark, also will have to sign off on the plans because some legion facilities would be moved to accommodate the park.

WHAT IT MEANS

The next phase of Marinapark design is expected to take six to eight months and will include public meetings.

BRISTOL STREET DENTAL OFFICE

Council members questioned the planning commission’s Nov. 2 decision not to grant a permit for a dental office and called up the issue for review. The office complex on Bristol Street is zoned for professional office use, but one dentist already operates there.

The offices are in Santa Ana Heights, and area residents complained that another dental office will create more traffic. Commissioners said they were concerned about parking and wondered whether a dental use is even allowed in a professional office zone, and they ultimately denied the permit.

WHAT IT MEANS

The council will review the planning commission’s denial of a permit for a dental office at its next meeting. Council members can override the commission vote if they choose.
