Vanguard 85, Freed-Hardeman 72

JACKSON, Tenn. — Jessica Richter made five three-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points as the top-ranked Lions knocked off No. 7 Freed-Hardeman Friday night at the Jackson Rotary Classic in Jackson, Tenn.

Vanguard (3-0) will face host Union, also ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, tonight at 7 as the three-day tournament showcasing six teams ranked in the top 25 wraps up.

Lacey Burns added 16 points, making four 3-pointers for the Lions, who made a dozen three-pointers. Kelly Schmidt had 16 points and five assists.

Vanguard grabbed 15 offensive rebounds to Freed-Hardeman’s two.

Jana Cross scored 25 points for Freed-Hardeman (4-1).

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Forward Stephanie Duda recorded her second double-double of the season, matching a career-best 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to lead the Anteaters to the nonconference victory at New Mexico State Friday night.

Duda, who made 7 of 13 field goals, also had three steals as the Anteaters (1-1) won their first game of the year.

Rebecca Maessen added 10 points and Kelly Cochran had 11 rebounds for UCI, which shot 26.7 percent from the field in the second half.

EUGENE, Ore. — Patrick Sanders and Darren Fells led the Anteaters with 10 points each, but it wasn’t enough as host Oregon made a dozen 3-pointers and also went on a 20-0 run over an eight-minute span in the second half to run away with the nonconference game.

UCI (2-3) had trouble with Chamberlain Oguchi, who scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the second half for the Ducks (4-0). He also made six three-pointers.

“This is our fifth game in eight days; it gets tough especially when they’re hitting three’s all night,” UC Irvine Coach Pat Douglass said in a press release.

Chuma Awaji added eight assists and seven rebounds for the Anteaters, who committed a season-high 26 turnovers.

COSTA MESA — After leading by one point at halftime, the Lions were outscored by 16 in the second half en route to losing a nonconference game at home to Pomona-Pitzer.

Miguel Rosales led the Lions with 11 points and Brian Roberts and Morgan McGovert added 10 points apiece.
