COLLEGE ROUNDUP:OCC earns upset

SANTA MONICA — Kaitlyn Schuesler scored 11 minutes into the first overtime, helping the No. 13th-seeded Orange Coast College women’s soccer team beat host No. 11 Santa Monica, 1-0, in the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs Tuesday.

Schuesler’s game-winner came on an assist from Melissa Weisz with four minutes remaining in the first 15-minute overtime period.

The Pirates (15-7-1) held on after Santa Monica’s (9-6-8) best shot in the second overtime bounced off the post, allowing goalkeeper Katie Johnson to record the shutout.

Orange Coast advances to play at No. 1 Cypress on Dec. 2 at 2 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Nevada 83, UC Irvine 64

RENO, Nev. — Patrick Sanders led the Anteaters with 15 points and seven rebounds in UCI’s nonconference loss to No. 21 Nevada Tuesday.

UCI (2-4) couldn’t keep up with the Wolf Pack (4-0), who had 17 fast-break points to the ‘Eaters’ zero.

Adam Templeton added 13 points for UCI, which will play host to Pepperdine Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

Nevada’s Nick Fazekas scored a game-high 29 points.

FRESNO — The Anteaters’ Kelly Cochran scored 17 points, but five Fresno State players scored in double-digits in the Bulldogs’ nonconference win at the SavMart Center Tuesday.

UCI dropped to 1-3.

Naomi Halman led UCI with six rebounds in 15 minutes of play.

It is the largest margin of defeat since UCI lost by 38 points to UCLA, Nov. 30, 2005.

The Anteaters play host to Nebraska Friday at 7 p.m.
