Caltrans funds high school poetry jam

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is launching an online high school poetry contest — the “Slow for the Cone Zone” poetry jam.

Cash prizes for the winning entries include $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. Prizes will be awarded by Dec. 22.

To compete, students must log on to slowfortheconezone.com. They have until Dec. 8 to write a poem on one of the two topics provided. The poetry contest aims to inform teens about safe driving in highway work zones while giving them an opportunity to win cash prizes.

Students should submit their entries by e-mail at poetryjam@ slowfortheconezone.com or by mail to “Slow for the Cone Zone” Poetry Jam, 6313 Elvas Ave., Sacramento, CA 95819.
