Girls under 12 (APP)

Newport Breakers 4, Huntington/Westminster 0: Newport’s Delaney McCardle scored in the first half, assisted by Brinley Siemonsma. The Breakers scored three more times in the second half, getting two goals from Kirsten Rohan and one from Taury Hlinka. Sarah Dailey, Kelsey Long, Katherine Maddox, Hannah Nance and Paige Tennison shared forward and midfield positions, taking many shots on goal. Breakers defenders Hannah Roman, Alexandra Steiner and Mollie Friend, along with goalie Layne More, also played solid games in Advanced Play Program action.

Smashing Pumpkins 1, Mighty Plums 0: Pumpkin Elizabeth Muenchow scored the game’s only goal late in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Pumpkin Hailey Smith drove an excellent up-field kick, followed by a powerful shot by Gigi Light that just missed. In the third quarter, the Pumpkins defense, including Sara Hamilton, Victoria Gonzales and Ryan Sweeney, blocked numerous Mighty Plums scoring chances. Pumpkins Muenchow, Megan Farley and Gina Scholey finished the game strong.

Smashing Pumpkins 1, Double Bubble 1: Gina Scholey made the Smashing Pumpkins’ goal in the second quarter on a penalty kick, while teammates Gigi Light and Elizabeth Muenchow both had scoring opportunities. Leah Van Dyke and Megan Farley had terrific offensive plays, and Hailey Smith’s powerful defense aided the Pumpkins. In the third quarter, Light, Sara Hamilton, Bridget Kavanaugh and Samantha Rossi played strong defensively, but Double Bubble scored its first goal in the fourth quarter. The Pumpkins tried to score again late in the game on nice up-field runs by Farley and Sophie Templin.

Girls under 11 (APP) Cherry Bombs 5, Lake Forest 0: Christina Arechigo punched in the first two goals for the Cherry Bombs, with an assist from Lea Phillips. Kathryn De La Torre headed in the third goal, Arechigo scored again and Rosalie Deliz rounded out the scoring. Samantha Vrbas, Nicole Fitzsimons, Katelyn Mead, Kendall Lindsay and Mikaya Swies controlled the midfield for the Cherry Bombs. Kellie Melendres kept the shutout as goalie while Emily Cook, Nikki Walsh and Ashley Harris dominated the defense.

Girls under 10

Cherry Bombs 2, Blue Angels 1: Olivia Sever scored the lone goal for the Angels, while goalies Logan Grove and Jordan Goldsberry kept the game tight. They were assisted with strong defensive plays by Kyira Wicks, Kendall Cosenza, Lilly Brandon and Astrea Montgomery. Full pressure was applied by Daniella Carrase and Giulia Chlarson, and Lindzy Konrad and Molly McCunniff battled until the end.

Blue Angels 4, Gator Girls 0: Daniella Carrase set the Blue Angels in motion by scoring the first goal, followed by a goal from Olivia Sever. Excellent goalkeeping by Logan Grove and Molly McCunniff held back the Gator Girls, and Kyira Wicks, Giulia Chlarson, McCunniff and Astrea Montgomery played aggressively on both offense and defense. Sever later scored another goal, and Jordan Goldsberry completed the scoring. Attackers Lily Brandon, Kendall Cosenza and Lindzy Konrad never let up for the Blue Angels.

Girls under 8

Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Screaming Tangerines: Siena Amoroso, Destry Comp, Heather Roberts and Julia Ackerman each scored once for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Julie Doyle had several fantastic crosses, setting up goals. Lauren Henke and Rayna Richardson also took shots on goal, while Erika Ells and Laura Mackenzie headed up a strong Chili Pepper defense. Alyssa Wilkens made some key stops in goal.

Boys under 8

Irish Bulldogs vs. Electric Bullsharks: The Irish Bulldog offense did well passing and ball-handling. Converting those skills to goals were Alex Davis, A.J. Roth and Chandler Siemonsma, each with one goal. Coming close with shots on goal were Colin Avary, Zach Durham and Jack McClintock. The Irish Bulldog defense was tough, with key plays from Cameron Fournier, Fara Lependu and Tom Phillips.

Boys under 7

Fire Balls vs. Strikers: Fire Balls forward Fernando Monroy scored two goals, one on a beautiful assist from Rory Sever. Strikers Aidan Steinke and Marcus Croxsun played very aggressively. Dominic Patino had his best attacking game of the season, while Trevor Cislaw turned in a great effort for all of his position assignments. Seth Thomas did an excellent job holding the line in goal, with assistance from sweeper Paolo Carrillo-Weisenburger.

Girls under 14

Costa Mesa Code Red 0: Cosa Mesa Blew Crew 0: In the first quarter, Code Red’s defense, including goalie Alexa Smith, sweeper Sydney Caffey and fullbacks Jessica Oseguera and Jenny Nava, had to work hard to hold Blew Crew back. The second quarter featured Code Red’s forwards Jillian Tanner, Sarah Bramlett and Vanessa Corona, and midfielders Hayley Smith, Amanda Wilson, Jade Gonzales and Adriana Gutierrez-Campos. All kept the ball on Blew Crew’s half most of the time, taking several shots, but none landing in the goal. With the game still scoreless, the pressure from both teams was stepped up even higher during the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Code Red midfielder Selina Grant got a break-through shot on goal, but it hit the post. Brooke Wanbaugh made her appearance at half-time and played an outstanding second half as forward. Code Red’s Tanner really got a workout throughout the game as she played midfield, forward, goalie and defense throughout the four quarters.

Code Red 2, Blue Vipers 2: Less than two minutes into the first quarter, Blue Vipers scored a rolling shot through Code Red’s defense. Defenders Jillian Tanner, Sydney Caffey, Jenny Nava, and first-half goalie Hayley Smith then stepped up their aggression. In the second quarter, midfielder Vanessa Corona had an outstanding breakaway for Code Red but was unable to score. In the third quarter, Code Red’s Adriana Gutierrez-Campos helped stabilize the defense, and Amanda Wilson passes the ball to Corona, whose shot from the left side tied the score at one-all. Later in the quarter, the Vipers received a penalty kick for a hand ball in the goal box, but it was blocked by Code Red second-half goalie Alexa Smith. On the last play of the third quarter, Corona crossed the ball in front of the goal, where Sarah Bramlett scored to give Code Red the lead. With the score sitting at 2-1 in the beginning of the fourth quarter, Code Red midfielders Jade Gonzales, Selina Grant, and Elizabeth Figueroa did all that they could to get the ball up to forwards Brooke Wanbaugh and Bramlett, keeping the pressure on the Vipers. But the Vipers scored again to salvage a tie.

Blue Crew 4, Royalty 2: Kylie Carpenter scored two goals for the Blue Crew, while Valeria Hernandez and Zuleyma Guzman also scored. Kinzie Schoneman from the Royalty blocked a penalty kick.

AYSO Region 57

Girls under 10

Maroon Monsoon: The Maroon Monsoon played extremely well to win their first playoff game. Leading the scoring were Morgan Duss with four goals and Anneliese Johansson with one.Assisting up front with aggressive play were Kira Woods, Madeleine Francis, Katie Chandler, Caitlin Harvey and Isabella Solomon. The Monsoon defense, led by Allison Green, Annalise Gushue and Claire Danner, were rock-solid holding off the Pink Panthers. Keeping a clean sheet were goalies Juliette-Bordier Johnson and Siena Sharf.

Boys under 10 (PLUS)

Corona del Mar Blue Eagles (Region 57) 0, Newport Beach (Region 97) 0: Corona del Mar finished as regular-season PLUS champions with the scoreless tie.

The CdM tough defense was led all regular season by goalie Logan Miller, who recorded eight shutouts. Standouts on defense were Ryan Maister, Kevin Fults, Nick Fox, Blake Fesko and Justin Hess, whose strength was aggressive fundamental positional play. Every single midfielder and forward was involved in the goal-scoring during the year, with a number of the boys recording individual hat-tricks. Forwards Justin Hanson, Timmy Hanson, Jason Neiger and Jake Giffin were extremely active in the offensive end of the field for the Blue Eagles, continually making crisp one-touch passes to keep the opposition moving. The midfield of Brett Greenlee, David Karamardian, Nick Premer, Jack Klein and Ryan Stone directed the transition from defense to offense throughout the season with a combination of good tackling and accurate passes.

Boys under 7

Gators vs. Golden Eagles: The Gators played an exciting game against the Golden Eagles. Patrick Wynn scored three goals, and Joey Flanigan scored with an assist by Will Cruttenden. Ryan Machoskie knocked in the final Gator goal. Charlie Jacobs, Evan Simpson and Souhail Siddiqi played very well as goalies.

Girls under 6

Blue Mermaids vs. Green Butterflies: Ireland Horvat and Julianne Bartz had several impressive dribbling runs and big kicks that scored goals for the Mermaids.

Hana Cloherty and Tiffany Johnson demonstrated ball control skills with goals coming on breakaways, crisp passes and corner kicks.

Defensive plays by Emma Daniel, Danielle Unvert and Ella Weiman saved the day for the Blue squad in the face of heavy pressure by the Butterflies.
